Michigan has enacted a groundbreaking piece of legislation prohibiting the use of the so-called "gay and trans panic" defense—a controversial legal tactic that historically allowed defendants to justify violent acts by citing a victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, signed House Bill 4718 into law on Tuesday, marking a significant commitment to enhancing protections for LGBTQ+ individuals across the state.
