WASHINGTON, D.C.— Mortgage rates have fallen to their lowest levels since March last week, triggering a significant surge in refinancing activity. However, potential homebuyers have not shown a similar level of enthusiasm, highlighting ongoing challenges in the housing market.

Surge in Refinancing Applications

According to the Mortgage Bankers Association’s (MBA) seasonally adjusted index, applications to refinance home loans surged by 15% last week compared to the previous week. This marked the highest level of refinancing activity since August 2022. Demand for refinancing was also 37% higher than during the same week last year when mortgage rates were identical. Despite this substantial increase, it is important to note that the surge is coming off a very low base.
