Mushroom edibles are rising in popularity. It's hard to say what's in them.

Surge in Mushroom Edibles Sparks Health Concerns Amid Regulatory Gaps

In recent months, mushroom edibles have seen a remarkable surge in popularity throughout the United States, touted for their diverse range of effects—from subtle cognitive enhancements associated with "microdoses" to intense psychedelic experiences. However, a significant number of these products do not contain psilocybin, the active compound in traditional magic mushrooms. Instead, they frequently feature Amanita muscaria, a distinct mushroom species known for its unique hallucinogenic properties.

Understanding Amanita Muscaria

Amanita muscaria, easily identifiable by its striking red cap adorned with white spots—reminiscent of the iconic power-up mushrooms from the Super Mario video games—contains a variety of psychoactive compounds. The most prominent of these is muscimol, which can induce significant alterations in mood, perception, and behavior. The psychoactive effects of Amanita muscaria can be highly variable and sometimes unpredictable, adding to the complexity of its impact on users.

Regulatory and Safety Concerns

The rising popularity of mushroom edibles has spotlighted serious concerns about their safety and regulation. Many products are marketed with ambiguous descriptions, sometimes labeling their contents as a “proprietary blend” or “magic” formula without providing specific details about the ingredients. This lack of transparency complicates the task of understanding what consumers are actually ingesting.

Dr. Avery Michienzi, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, has emphasized the risks associated with these unregulated products. “They’re unregulated, and no one knows what they’re putting in them,” Michienzi remarked. The variability in dosages and the potential presence of undisclosed ingredients pose significant health risks to consumers.

Recent Health Incidents and Product Recalls

The health risks linked to mushroom edibles became starkly apparent in late June 2024, when Prophet Premium Blends initiated a recall of its Diamond Shruumz mushroom edibles. This recall followed reports of severe health issues among users, including seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, and abnormal heart rhythms. As of the latest update, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified 74 illnesses across 28 states associated with these products, resulting in 38 hospitalizations and two suspected deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued advisories to healthcare providers to be vigilant for cases involving these products.

The company attributed the health issues to “higher than normal” levels of muscimol in their products. The FDA’s ongoing investigation has also uncovered the presence of other substances, including psilacetin—a compound related to psilocybin known for its psychoactive effects. According to Christopher Pauli, CEO of Tryptomics, a laboratory specializing in the analysis of plants and fungi, psilacetin, like psilocybin, is metabolized into psilocin in the body, which is responsible for the psychoactive effects experienced by users.

Emergence of Mushroom Edibles and Market Trends

The proliferation of mushroom edibles is evident from their increasing availability across various retail outlets, particularly vape shops. Eric Leas, an assistant professor at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health at the University of California, San Diego, has observed a significant rise in mushroom products in these stores since last fall. Leas manages a statewide monitoring program that tracks products sold in vape shops and has noted the expanding presence of mushroom edibles in these venues.

ShroomLand LA, a mushroom dispensary located in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, has reported a substantial increase in business. Store manager Rod Mendez noted that the shop sells approximately 400 mushroom edibles weekly and caters to customers seeking relief for conditions such as muscular pain, sleep disorders, and eating issues. Despite the recent FDA warning, Mendez stated that the store has not encountered any related issues and emphasizes that all products are lab-tested and certified.

Calls for Increased Regulation

The rapid expansion of mushroom edibles has led to calls for enhanced regulatory oversight. In a letter published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Leas and other experts have called for stricter regulations on Amanita muscaria products, citing a 114% increase in Google searches related to these items. Kaitlyn Brown, clinical managing director of America’s Poison Centers, reported that poison control centers began incorporating specific codes to track cases involving mushroom edibles in late 2023, reflecting their growing prevalence.

Dr. Christopher Holstege, director of the Blue Ridge Poison Center, has reported managing five cases of adverse reactions to Amanita muscaria products since September, with symptoms including confusion and rapid heart rate. A notable incident involved a 3-year-old who required hospitalization after consuming two Amanita muscaria gummies but was discharged the following day with symptoms such as sleepiness and vomiting. Testing of similar products revealed a range of substances, including caffeine, ephedrine, and kratom, but none contained Amanita muscaria compounds, highlighting discrepancies between labeled and actual ingredients.

Expert Opinions on Safety and Regulation

The safety of Amanita muscaria edibles remains a contentious issue. Dr. Mason Marks, senior fellow at the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School, cautioned against the outright banning of these products, suggesting that such measures may not effectively address the underlying issues. Instead, Marks advocates for establishing minimal regulatory standards to ensure product transparency and consumer safety. He also recommends that consumers review lab analyses provided by manufacturers, though he acknowledges that these reports can sometimes be unreliable.

The current situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive regulation and enhanced consumer education to address the risks associated with mushroom edibles. As the market for these products continues to expand, ensuring accurate labeling and safety standards will be crucial to safeguarding public health and preventing further incidents of adverse effects.
