Nancy Pelosi: It’s a 'legitimate question' whether Biden's debate performance was a 'condition' or just an 'episode'

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a prominent figure within the House Democratic Caucus, offered her perspective on President Joe Biden's recent debate performance, raising pertinent questions about its implications.

During an interview on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on Tuesday, Pelosi acknowledged the legitimacy of concerns regarding Biden's debate performance, framing it as a critical inquiry into whether it represented an isolated incident or a more persistent issue. "I think it's a legitimate question to say, is this an episode, or is this a condition? And so when people ask that question, it's completely legitimate — of both candidates," she asserted.

Pelosi stressed the necessity for both candidates to undergo assessments of their mental acuity and overall health. "Both candidates owe whatever test you want to put them to, in terms of their mental acuity and their health — both of them," she emphasized.

In response to inquiries seeking clarification, Pelosi's spokesperson Ian Krager reiterated her confidence in President Biden, affirming that she "has full confidence in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025.”

At the White House daily briefing later that day, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed questions concerning Biden's health, underscoring the administration's commitment to transparency. "We have put forward a thorough, transparent annual report on his health, so they have said it is not warranted, it is not necessary" to conduct a cognitive test, she clarified.

When pressed on whether Biden had undergone any medical evaluations following the debate, Jean-Pierre urged a broader perspective, acknowledging that Biden's team recognized he had a "bad night."

Biden's performance during the debate had drawn criticism for instances where he appeared to lose his train of thought and stumbled over words, sparking renewed speculation about his candidacy.

Pelosi shared insights into varied feedback she had received from fellow Democrats regarding Biden's continued candidacy. She conveyed sentiments ranging from staunch support for Biden’s leadership qualities to concerns over his recent performance relative to his opponent's shortcomings.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas recently became the first Democratic congressman to publicly call for Biden's withdrawal from the race. Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., echoed concerns on CNN, emphasizing that Biden's debate showing was not an isolated incident.

Pelosi refrained from making prognostications about Biden's future, citing her extensive experience and expressing confidence that he will "continue to be a great president of the United States."

Underlining the importance of Biden's unscripted interactions with the public, Pelosi recommended that he engage in several unfiltered interviews with serious journalists. "Not one, maybe two — a couple of those. I think that is essential," she emphasized.

Later on Tuesday, ABC News announced Biden's forthcoming interview with anchor George Stephanopoulos, scheduled for Friday, as part of efforts to address public concerns.

Pelosi confirmed that she hadn't spoken to Biden since the debate, echoing sentiments from other Democratic figures like Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., a close ally of the president.

The White House last released Biden's health information following a routine physical exam in February 2024, with Jean-Pierre dismissing calls for a cognitive test, affirming Biden's daily cognitive acuity.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump's health disclosure in November 2023 from his doctor described him as in "excellent" physical and mental health, though it lacked specific test results.

Pelosi’s remarks underscored the delicate balance between supporting Biden's presidency and addressing legitimate concerns within the Democratic Party regarding his candidacy moving forward.
