Naomi Pomeroy, 'Top Chef Masters' star and James Beard Award winner, dies in tubing accident at 49

PORTLAND, OREGON — In a deeply sorrowful development, the body of Naomi Pomeroy, the renowned Portland chef, was recovered on Wednesday following a prolonged and intensive search operation. Pomeroy, aged 49, tragically drowned in a tubing accident that occurred over the weekend in the Willamette River near Corvallis, Oregon. The recovery of her body followed several days of exhaustive search efforts.

Details of the Incident

On Saturday, Pomeroy was tubing on the Willamette River with her husband, fellow chef Kyle Linden Webster, and another individual when the accident took place. According to an investigation conducted by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Pomeroy was pulled under the river’s surface when her tubing gear became entangled on an underwater snag. The situation was exacerbated by a paddleboard leash that inadvertently kept her submerged, complicating rescue efforts.

Local fire department personnel managed to rescue Webster and the third person involved, bringing them safely to shore. However, despite their best efforts, they were unable to recover Pomeroy's body. The search, which employed sonar technology, underwater cameras, and drones, was severely hampered by heavy debris in the river, which obscured the view and made recovery operations challenging.

Her body was eventually discovered by canoeists on the Willamette River around 10 a.m. Wednesday. The location of the discovery was approximately half a mile upstream of Hyak Park, situated between Corvallis and Albany. According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, marine deputies promptly arrived at the scene and located Pomeroy’s body resting in a shallow section of bedrock with only one to two feet of water above it.

A Culinary Icon

Naomi Pomeroy was an influential figure in the culinary world and a pivotal force in Portland’s vibrant dining scene. Her culinary journey began with self-taught skills that led her to national prominence, particularly through her French-influenced restaurant, Beast. Under Pomeroy's stewardship, Beast achieved notable acclaim, receiving the prestigious James Beard Award in 2014, which recognized her exceptional talent and significant contributions to the culinary arts.

Pomeroy's illustrious career was characterized by a series of significant accolades. In 2009, she was honored as one of Food & Wine magazine’s best new chefs. Her television appearances on "Iron Chef" in 2010 and "Top Chef Masters" in 2011 further elevated her status in the culinary community. Additionally, Pomeroy served as a recurring judge on "Top Chef," where she showcased her culinary expertise and passion.

Food critic Karen Brooks of Portland Monthly conveyed the profound impact of Pomeroy's loss on the Portland community, writing, “The larger Portland community is in shock that one of its brightest stars has met a sudden and tragic end to a vibrant life.”

Recent Endeavors and Legacy

In recent years, Pomeroy had embarked on new culinary ventures, including the opening of Cornet Custard, a frozen custard shop renowned for its innovative flavors and beeswax-coated cake cones. She was also in the process of launching a new restaurant adjacent to Cornet Custard, in collaboration with fellow restaurateur Luke Dirks.

Fellow chef and television personality Amanda Freitag paid heartfelt tribute to Pomeroy, praising her creativity and dedication. “I was always inspired by her extreme creativity and commitment to her craft. She was always ahead of the curve and stood strong for everything she believed about what was the proper way to feed people good food and support her culinary community,” Freitag wrote on X.

Other prominent chefs, including Dominique Crenn and Gavin Kaysen, also offered their condolences, remembering Pomeroy as a “beautiful soul.”

In a 2010 interview with Oprah magazine, Pomeroy, who was featured among the magazine’s 10 Women on the Rise, expressed her desire to be remembered for her efforts to make the understanding of food origins a common practice.

Public and Political Reactions

The passing of Naomi Pomeroy has generated a significant outpouring of grief and respect from both the public and political figures. Representative Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., issued a statement reflecting on her loss. “Naomi was not just a fabulous chef and entrepreneur, but an amazing human being,” Blumenauer said. “Her impact went far beyond Portland, helping establish our leadership and reputation for food excellence. She will be greatly missed.”

As Portland and the broader culinary community come to terms with this immense loss, the legacy of Naomi Pomeroy's contributions to the culinary world and her influence on food culture will undoubtedly endure. Her innovative spirit and dedication to her craft have left an indelible mark on the culinary landscape.
