NASCAR took a significant stride into the future of racing on Saturday by unveiling its state-of-the-art electric race car prototype, signaling a commitment to reducing emissions and embracing sustainability in a sport traditionally powered by gasoline.

The introduction of the "ABB NASCAR EV Prototype," developed in collaboration with automotive giants Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, represented a pivotal moment just ahead of NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race. This electrified stock car boasts formidable capabilities, generating up to 1,000 kW (equivalent to 1,341 horsepower) at peak power. Incorporating a regenerative braking system akin to many modern hybrid and electric vehicles, it converts kinetic energy from braking into electrical power, thereby enhancing both efficiency and performance.

Teaming up with ABB, a leader in electrification and automation, NASCAR underscored its commitment to achieving net-zero operating emissions by 2035, aligning with broader national efforts to transition towards cleaner energy solutions.

Chris Shigas, ABB’s head of communications in the U.S., highlighted the initiative’s role in advancing sustainability discussions on a national scale: “This partnership provides us with a platform to address crucial issues facing our country and our collective journey towards a sustainable future.”

While NASCAR currently does not plan to completely phase out combustion engines from stock car racing, the collaboration with ABB presents opportunities to explore high-performance electric racing in the future. Both organizations plan to assess various facets of NASCAR competitions, race track operations, office logistics, and long-haul transportation for potential electrification.

“We will be evaluating all aspects of their operations — from long-haul logistics to the electric golf carts on the tracks and EV charging infrastructure,” Shigas elaborated. “This multi-year partnership has the potential to set an example for how companies across the U.S. can elevate their sustainability initiatives.”

In 2023, NASCAR committed to achieving net-zero operating emissions by 2035, outlining strategies such as transitioning to 100% renewable electricity at owned race tracks and facilities, expanding EV charging infrastructure, and developing sustainable racing fuels.

Eric Nyquist, NASCAR’s senior vice president, expressed optimism about the collaboration with ABB, highlighting its pivotal role in supporting NASCAR's ambitious sustainability objectives: “This partnership with ABB will play a crucial role in our efforts to decarbonize our operations as we strive towards achieving net-zero operating emissions over the coming decade.”
