Nashville museum is returning 500-year-old Mexican artifact collection back 'where it belongs'

Nashville’s Parthenon Museum Bids Farewell to Mexican Artifacts After 78 Years

In a poignant and historically significant development, the Parthenon Museum in Nashville, Tennessee, is preparing to part with a prized collection of over 250 Mexican artifacts. This month, these invaluable relics—including ancient tools, ceremonial instruments, and intricate clay sculptures dating back more than 500 years—are being returned to their country of origin, Mexico. The artifacts will be transported to Mexico City, where they are expected to be prominently displayed, allowing them to once again become integral to Mexico's rich cultural heritage.

Historical Context and Repatriation Efforts

The origins of this collection trace back to the late 1960s when an Oregon physician donated the artifacts to the Parthenon Museum, ostensibly for tax benefits. At the time of donation, the artifacts had been sold cheaply by farmers in western Mexico, who had mistakenly perceived them as mere relics rather than priceless historical treasures.

Bonnie Seymour, the assistant curator who led the museum’s repatriation effort, emphasized the broader implications of this return. “Mexico has had a lot of their history removed in this way,” Seymour noted. She underscored the ethical responsibility of museums to rectify historical wrongs and repatriate artifacts to their rightful places. During a celebration marking the repatriation, which featured traditional Mexican dances and cultural expressions, Seymour highlighted the symbolic importance of the return. “It’s just the responsibility of all museums to return that,” she stated. While acknowledging that the return cannot fully restore the lost historical context, she believed it represents a crucial step towards addressing historical injustices. “We can’t fix the holes that are lost, because a lot of context is lost. But we can give it back to where it belongs,” Seymour added.

Exhibition and Educational Impact

The Parthenon Museum’s current exhibition, “Repatriation and Its Impact,” offers visitors a final opportunity to engage with these artifacts. The exhibit explores the complex global debate surrounding the repatriation of cultural objects, drawing parallels with other prominent cases, such as the ongoing discussions about the return of the Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum in London to Greece.

Seymour highlighted the nuanced role of museums in this discourse. “Museums aren’t evil institutions trying to keep people’s things away from them,” she explained, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of various institutions in navigating the repatriation process. Several museums have reached out to her for guidance on returning their collections, underscoring the ongoing challenges and responsibilities involved in addressing historical claims.

Cultural and Community Engagement

The Mexican Consulate in Atlanta is managing the collection and return of these artifacts. Consul General Javier Díaz de León noted that this repatriation is part of a broader initiative by the Mexican government, which has recovered over 13,000 artifacts in recent years. Upon arrival in Mexico, the artifacts will be curated by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, which will determine their permanent exhibition and ensure they are preserved and displayed with the respect they deserve.

“By recovering these pieces, we’re recovering a piece of a memory,” Díaz de León explained. He emphasized the significance of reconnecting Mexican citizens with tangible elements of their heritage, which reflect their ancestors’ lives and cultural history. This repatriation not only restores physical artifacts but also reinforces the cultural continuity and historical connection for future generations in Mexico.

In Nashville, the Parthenon Museum will retain a connection to these artifacts through 3D-printed replicas now part of the museum’s educational collection. These replicas include notable pieces such as a clay sculpture of a Mexican hairless dog and are intended to provide educational insights into the artifacts’ historical and cultural significance.

Artistic Tributes and Community Reflections

Complementing the exhibition, the museum features 3D artwork by Jose Vera Gonzalez, a Nashville-based artist originally from Michoacán, Mexico. Gonzalez’s works—featuring a feathered serpent, a bronzed Aztec warrior, and a vibrant depiction of the Mexican hairless dog—draw inspiration from the museum's pre-Columbian collection. Gonzalez, who regards Seymour as a “hero,” finds deep inspiration in the artifacts and their representation of Mexico’s rich artistic and cultural legacy.

For many visitors to the Parthenon Museum, the departure of these artifacts is a bittersweet moment. Paulina Alvarado, a Mexican student studying in Nashville who participated in the repatriation celebrations, expressed mixed emotions. “It’s nice to see the culture being shared worldwide,” she said. “But having permission from that culture and from the people to be able to share that culture with others—that’s important to me.”

The return of these Mexican artifacts marks a significant milestone in the ongoing conversation about cultural heritage and repatriation. It underscores the importance of addressing historical grievances and fostering global cultural understanding, reflecting a commitment to ethical stewardship and the restoration of cultural legacies.
