Part of Kenya’s parliament on fire as thousands of protesters enter

Kenya's parliament building faced a dramatic escalation on Tuesday as sections of the complex were consumed by fire amidst violent clashes between thousands of protesters and security forces. This unprecedented challenge to the government unfolded against a backdrop of simmering discontent over a controversial finance bill aimed at introducing new taxes, exacerbating already high living costs.

Reporters on the ground witnessed scenes of chaos and reported at least three casualties near the parliament complex, where police responded with live ammunition to disperse the crowds. The bill has sparked widespread public anger in Kenya, where economic hardships have fueled long-standing grievances.

Despite efforts by police to barricade access, protesters managed to breach security and enter parliament shortly after the bill narrowly passed. Inside, legislators fled to safety through underground tunnels, while opposition members were allowed to exit unharmed by demonstrators who showed solidarity with those opposing the bill.

Adjacent to parliament, the office of Nairobi’s governor, a member of the ruling party, was set ablaze, prompting police to use water cannons to control the flames amid the turmoil. The unrest highlighted deep-seated frustrations among the population, echoed in chants demanding accountability from politicians.

Tensions escalated further as police clashed with protesters seeking refuge and medical aid at a nearby church. Reports from the Kenya Human Rights Commission documented instances of police firing at demonstrators, raising concerns over excessive force and human rights violations.

Kenya Law Society President Faith Odhiambo expressed alarm over reports of 50 individuals, including her personal assistant, allegedly being abducted by law enforcement ahead of the protests. Civil society groups condemned these actions as attempts to suppress dissent and intimidate government critics.

President William Ruto, absent from the capital during the unrest for an African Union retreat, acknowledged youth grievances and pledged to address their concerns. However, his absence left a leadership void as Kenya confronted its most significant political crisis in recent history.

As events continue to unfold, questions persist over the government’s handling of the escalating unrest and its implications for democracy and civil liberties in Kenya. The situation underscores a pivotal moment in the country's political landscape, where demands for transparency, accountability, and economic equity clash with entrenched power dynamics.
