Pennsylvania State Police identified Trump shooter as 'suspicious' before attack

Gunman’s Suspicious Behavior and Security Lapses Unveiled in House Hearing

In a recent session of the House Homeland Security Committee, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris provided significant details regarding the circumstances leading up to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Paris disclosed that the gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, had exhibited several behaviors of concern prior to the shooting, which were inadequately addressed by the security personnel in place.

Suspicious Behavior and Heightened Concerns

Thomas Crooks initially attracted suspicion due to his unusual conduct at the campaign rally held on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Col. Paris testified that Crooks was observed "milling about" the event venue without making any effort to enter the rally. This unusual behavior drew the attention of security personnel. The situation was further exacerbated when Crooks was seen carrying a rangefinder—a device used to measure distances—which increased concerns about his intentions and possible threat level.

Paris noted that the initial suspicion regarding Crooks was communicated to the Butler County Emergency Services Unit (ESU), responsible for the venue's security. The ESU promptly forwarded this concern, along with a photograph of Crooks, to the state police, which in turn passed the information to the Secret Service, which was overseeing the security for the event.

Security Measures and Oversight

Col. Paris elaborated that the Butler County ESU had spotted Crooks from a second-story window but subsequently left their posts to search for him. Paris conceded that he could not provide an exact timeline of these actions. Unfortunately, Crooks was not formally recognized as a threat until moments before he opened fire, resulting in injuries to Trump, the death of one rallygoer, and the wounding of another.

During the hearing, Paris revealed that one of his area commanders had specifically questioned the Secret Service about the security plan for the building from which Crooks fired during a final security planning walk-through conducted two days before the rally. Paris reported that Secret Service agents had confirmed that the Butler ESU was responsible for securing that particular area.

Role of Pennsylvania State Police and Secret Service

The Pennsylvania State Police’s role at the rally included supporting the Secret Service by assisting with the transportation of Trump and securing posts within the event's security perimeter. Paris mentioned that the State Police also provided two marked cars with uniformed troopers stationed outside the security perimeter for "roving duties."

In the wake of the assassination attempt, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle faced substantial scrutiny from lawmakers. Cheatle's resignation, which occurred just a day after the House Oversight Committee hearing, was driven by widespread calls for accountability and concerns over her perceived lack of transparency regarding the security arrangements and the gunman’s access to the building's roof.

Investigative Efforts and Evidence Collection

The Pennsylvania State Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the shooting. According to Paris, this investigation has involved interviewing approximately 100 individuals and collecting around 1,000 pieces of evidence. These efforts are aimed at reconstructing the sequence of events and identifying any security lapses that may have contributed to the incident.

Conclusion

The hearing brought to light critical issues related to the security failures that preceded the assassination attempt on former President Trump. The suspicious behaviors exhibited by Thomas Crooks, coupled with lapses in security measures and inter-agency communication, highlight the complexity and challenges associated with securing high-profile events. As the investigation progresses, the focus will remain on thoroughly understanding the failures and implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
