Gillian Tones, a 26-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, tragically lost her life on Sunday in a devastating incident at Glacier National Park in Montana, where she was swept over waterfalls and trapped underwater by a log.

The National Park Service provided a somber account on Tuesday, detailing how Tones slipped on wet rocks and fell into Virginia Creek between St. Mary Falls and Virginia Falls during the afternoon. Witnesses described the swift and forceful current swiftly carrying her over multiple smaller waterfalls before she became ensnared beneath a submerged log.

The gravity of the situation prompted numerous 911 calls to the park's dispatch around 5:20 p.m., with park rangers arriving approximately 25 minutes later to a scene marked by urgency and distress. Bystanders had already initiated courageous efforts to extricate Tones from the water, successfully freeing her from the log.

Despite the immediate and valiant attempts at resuscitation by on-site personnel, which included park visitors and emergency responders, Tones did not respond. Following exhaustive efforts that persisted until around 7 p.m., resuscitation efforts were halted.

In adherence to established protocols, Tones' body was subsequently transported to the medical examiner's office in Missoula, Montana, where a thorough autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the precise cause of death.
