Russian court sentences U.S. soldier to nearly 4 years on theft charges

MOSCOW—A court in Russia’s far eastern city of Vladivostok sentenced an American soldier, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, to three years and nine months in prison on charges of theft and threats of murder on Wednesday. This development adds another layer of complexity to the already strained U.S.-Russia relations amid ongoing tensions due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Black, 34, was arrested earlier this year after his girlfriend accused him of theft during a visit to Vladivostok, a Pacific port city. According to U.S. officials and Russian authorities, Black had traveled to Vladivostok to see his girlfriend when the incident occurred.

The Pervomaisky District Court in Vladivostok also ordered Black to pay 10,000 rubles ($115) in damages. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of four years and eight months. Black's sentencing underscores the broader issue of Americans being detained in Russia under various charges.

Among those currently detained are corporate security executive Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, both of whom the U.S. government has designated as wrongfully detained. Efforts to negotiate their release have been ongoing. Other Americans detained in Russia include musician Travis Leake, arrested last year on drug-related charges; teacher Marc Fogel, sentenced to 14 years in prison on drug charges; and dual nationals Alsu Kurmasheva and Ksenia Khavana.

The U.S. State Department strongly advises American citizens against traveling to Russia. Under Pentagon policy, service members must obtain clearance for international travel from a security manager or commander. The U.S. Army disclosed last month that Black did not seek or receive clearance for his travel to Russia, and it was not authorized by the Defense Department. Given the current hostilities in Ukraine and associated risks, such travel would have been highly unlikely to receive approval.

Black, who was on leave, was scheduled to return to his home base at Fort Cavazos, Texas, from Camp Humphreys in South Korea, where he was stationed with the Eighth Army. Cynthia Smith, an Army spokesperson, stated that Black signed out for his move back home but instead flew from Incheon, South Korea, through China to Vladivostok for personal reasons.

Black’s girlfriend, Alexandra Vashchuk, commented earlier this month that the incident was a "simple domestic dispute" during which Black "became aggressive and attacked" her. She claimed that he stole money from her wallet without permission. U.S. officials confirmed that Black, who is married, met his girlfriend in South Korea.

According to these officials, Vashchuk had lived in South Korea, and last fall, she and Black were involved in some type of domestic dispute or altercation. Subsequently, she left South Korea, although it remains unclear if she was forced to leave or what role, if any, South Korean authorities played in the matter.

Black's arrest and sentencing highlight the complexities and personal risks involved for U.S. military personnel and civilians in navigating international laws and personal relationships, especially in countries with strained diplomatic relations with the United States. This case is likely to be closely monitored by both U.S. and Russian authorities as part of the broader geopolitical tensions between the two nations.

The incident further complicates the delicate diplomatic dance between Washington and Moscow. It underscores the potential perils for U.S. citizens abroad, particularly in regions where bilateral relations are fraught. As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, cases like Black's will undoubtedly play a role in shaping the narrative of international diplomacy and the treatment of detained individuals.
