Tesla shares rise on better-than-expected Q2 deliveries report

Tesla disclosed its second-quarter vehicle production and delivery figures for 2024 on Tuesday, surpassing market expectations and demonstrating resilience in the face of numerous challenges.

During Q2 2024, Tesla achieved a total delivery of 443,956 vehicles, with production reaching 410,831 vehicles for the same period. These figures exceeded Wall Street's consensus estimates, which had projected deliveries to hover around 439,000 vehicles. Despite a slight year-over-year decline of 4.8% from 466,140 deliveries in Q2 2023, Tesla's Q2 2024 deliveries showed a robust 14.8% increase compared to the previous quarter, indicating strong momentum.

Investors responded positively to the news, propelling Tesla's stock up by more than 8% during early trading following the better-than-expected delivery report. This surge came amidst a challenging year for Tesla shares, which had initially seen a 16% decline before a recent 6% rally on Monday.

Delivery figures serve as a critical metric for assessing Tesla's sales performance, closely monitored by stakeholders and analysts alike. Tesla categorizes deliveries into two primary segments: Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, alongside all other vehicle types. However, specific breakdowns for individual models or regional deliveries are not disclosed by Tesla.

Tesla's current vehicle lineup encompasses its highly popular Model Y crossover utility vehicles, Model 3 sedans, the newly introduced Cybertruck pickups, as well as the Model X SUV and flagship Model S sedan.

Earlier in the year, Tesla reported a notable decline of 8.5% in first-quarter deliveries, totaling 386,810 vehicles. This marked Tesla's first annual decline in deliveries since 2020, attributed in part to temporary factory closures stemming from an alleged arson incident at Tesla's German facility and logistical delays due to geopolitical tensions impacting global supply chains.

In addition to operational challenges, Tesla faced intensified competition from other electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, particularly in the competitive Chinese market. Concerns over brand perception were highlighted in a recent survey, linking CEO Elon Musk's public controversies and statements to potential erosion in Tesla's brand image.

To stimulate demand amidst these challenges, Tesla implemented various sales incentives and discounts throughout the year. Notably, Tesla offered zero-interest loans for Model 3 and Model Y purchases in China until July 31. China remains a crucial market for Tesla, contributing approximately $21.75 billion or 22.5% of its total revenue in 2023, as outlined in its annual financial filing.

Looking forward, Colin Langan, an analyst at Wells Fargo, expressed concerns about declining delivery growth driven by softening demand and shrinking profitability amidst ongoing price adjustments. Langan recommended selling Tesla shares, anticipating further declines in automotive gross margins as the year progresses.

Investor focus now shifts to Tesla's upcoming second-quarter earnings report later this month, coupled with an anticipated marketing event in August where Tesla plans to unveil its design for a dedicated robotaxi or "CyberCab." These events are poised to offer deeper insights into Tesla's strategic initiatives aimed at maintaining leadership in the competitive EV market amid evolving industry dynamics.
