Tim Weah and others on the U.S. soccer team were targeted by racist abuse after loss

ATLANTA — Following their 2-1 defeat to Panama in the Copa America on Thursday night, Tim Weah and his fellow U.S. national team members were subjected to a barrage of racist abuse on social media.

Promptly responding to the situation, the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) expressed profound concern regarding the racist comments directed at the players. Weah, who is Black, became a focal point after receiving a red card in the 18th minute for an altercation with a Panama player, marking the earliest such expulsion for a U.S. player since Jimmy Conrad in a 2010 friendly against Honduras.

Despite playing with 10 men for most of the match, the understrength American squad nearly salvaged a draw, only for Panama to score a late goal that ended their hopes of advancing beyond the tournament's initial stage.

In an official statement, the USSF unequivocally condemned the racist remarks, asserting, “There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior.” The federation reaffirmed its commitment to principles of respect and inclusivity, which it upholds as fundamental organizational values.

Expressing concern for the mental well-being of its players and staff, the USSF announced plans to offer mental health support to those affected by the abusive comments. Additionally, the federation reported the incidents to CONMEBOL, the tournament's South American governing body.

In response, CONMEBOL denounced the racist comments, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to foster a culture that rejects racism, offensive content on social media, and all forms of discrimination within the sport.

Tim Weah took personal responsibility for the incident, publicly apologizing on social media for his actions leading to the red card. He acknowledged the impact on his teammates and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to both the team and the country.

“No matter what, I will always fight for my team and my country till the day I am no longer needed or capable to!” Weah expressed. “I sincerely apologize to everyone. My love for this team goes beyond just football, and I am deeply saddened and angered by my actions that affected my teammates tonight.”

This incident underscores the broader challenges faced by athletes in combating racism and discrimination in sports, underscoring the ongoing need for vigilance and proactive measures to promote equality and respect across all levels of competition.
