Where JD Vance stands on abortion, based on 6 of his statements

Donald Trump’s Selection of Ohio Sen. JD Vance as Running Mate: Implications for the Republican Ticket

WASHINGTON — The appointment of Ohio Senator JD Vance as Donald Trump’s vice-presidential running mate introduces a notable and unwavering anti-abortion advocate to the top of the Republican ticket. Officially announced on Monday, Vance's selection highlights a key facet of Trump's campaign platform and emphasizes the alignment between the two figures on pivotal social issues.

Vance, who has consistently identified as “100% pro-life,” has articulated a position on abortion that has evolved since he entered politics. Over time, his rhetoric has increasingly aligned with Trump’s views. In May, during an interview on CBS News’ *Face the Nation*, Vance conveyed that his abortion stance aligns with Trump’s perspective: advocating for states to determine their own abortion policies while personally opposing abortion rights.

“What I’ve said consistently is the gross majority of policy here is gonna be set by the states,” Vance remarked. He further stated, “I wanna save as many babies as possible,” acknowledging his belief that late-term abortions should be restricted with reasonable exceptions, while supporting state-level decision-making on the matter.

Nevertheless, Vance’s position has not always been in perfect harmony with Trump’s state-centered approach. During his Senate campaign in October 2022, Vance endorsed a national bill proposed by Senator Lindsey Graham that aimed to impose a 15-week limit on abortions nationwide. This bill, which includes exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother, would not override state laws with stricter restrictions.

“You can have some minimum national standards, which is my view, while also allowing the states to make up their minds,” Vance stated during the debate. He acknowledged the diversity of regional perspectives, noting, “California is going to have a different view than Ohio. That’s totally fine.”

A representative from Vance’s Senate office declined to provide current comments on his abortion stance, referring inquiries to his previous statements. Some of these statements have appeared to diverge from Trump’s position that abortion should be managed at the state level. In November, Vance expressed strong opposition to an Ohio constitutional amendment that codified abortion and contraception rights, describing its passage as a “gut punch” and criticizing the pro-abortion rights movement as promoting detrimental ideologies.

“There is something sociopathic about a political movement that tells young women (and men) that it is liberating to murder their own children,” Vance wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Despite his rigid anti-abortion views, Vance has demonstrated a pragmatic approach to appealing to voters. He has differentiated between his personal beliefs and political strategy, arguing, “This is not about moral legitimacy but political reality.” He suggested that while certain abortion restrictions might be politically feasible, more extreme measures, such as heartbeat bills—which generally ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected around six weeks—are less practical and may not garner sufficient public support.

Vance has also discussed the necessity of including exceptions for rape and the life of the mother, portraying these provisions as essential for political viability. In a December interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, he emphasized, “We have to accept that people do not want blanket abortion bans. They just don’t.”

Vance’s legislative record underscores his firm anti-abortion stance. He holds an “A+” rating from the Susan B. Anthony List National Pro-Life Scorecard, reflecting his strong support for anti-abortion legislation. In contrast, he has received a 0% rating on Reproductive Freedom for All’s congressional scorecard. Additionally, Vance, along with 46 other Republican senators, co-sponsored a bill in January 2023 that seeks to prohibit federal funding for abortions through Medicaid or other government programs.

The influence of candidates' positions on abortion is expected to be substantial in the forthcoming election. A national NBC News poll conducted in April indicated that voters consider abortion one of the most critical issues. Similarly, a 2023 survey by the Public Religion Research Institute found that over 60% of Americans support the legality of abortion in most or all cases.

In response to shifting public sentiment, the Republican Party has recently revised its stance on abortion. Earlier this month, the Republican National Committee adopted a platform granting states the authority to establish their own abortion laws, representing a departure from the party’s previous advocacy for a national ban. This adjustment reflects a broader re-evaluation of the party’s position on abortion in light of evolving voter attitudes and political dynamics.
