With Biden's backing, Kamala Harris leads the pack in bid to replace him on the ticket

Vice President Kamala Harris Receives President Joe Biden’s Endorsement for 2024 Presidential Nomination Amidst Biden’s Withdrawal from Race

In a momentous and historically significant turn of events, President Joe Biden has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, following his decision to withdraw from his re-election bid for the 2024 presidential race. This pivotal endorsement, announced on Sunday, has dramatically reshaped the landscape of the Democratic nomination process, positioning Harris as the leading contender for the Democratic Party’s nomination for the upcoming presidential election.

Biden’s withdrawal from the race has opened the field for the Democratic nomination, allowing Harris and other potential candidates to vie for the party’s top position. Delegates who were elected to support Biden during the primary campaign are now tasked with casting their votes to determine the party’s nominee. The Democratic National Convention, scheduled to commence on August 19 in Chicago, will be the venue where this nomination will be solidified. With Biden’s endorsement, Harris emerges as the frontrunner and a formidable candidate for the nomination.

Should Harris secure the nomination, she will make history as the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be nominated by a major U.S. political party for the presidency. Her potential candidacy marks a significant milestone in American political history, reflecting both the evolving demographics and the dynamic nature of the Democratic Party.

In a statement following Biden’s announcement, Harris expressed her deep gratitude for the President’s endorsement and outlined her vision for the future. “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement, and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris stated. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”

Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race is unprecedented and historic, driven by growing concerns over his age and cognitive sharpness, further highlighted by a subpar debate performance against former President Donald Trump in June. At 59 years old, Harris is 22 years younger than the 81-year-old Biden, a factor that may have played a role in Biden’s decision to step aside.

Harris, born to immigrant parents—a mother from India and a father from Jamaica—hails from Oakland, California. Her political career began in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, where she was elected District Attorney in 2003. She gained national prominence upon becoming California’s Attorney General in 2010 and was subsequently elected to the U.S. Senate from California in 2016, becoming the second Black woman and the first South Asian woman to serve in the Senate.

Tory Gavito, president of Way to Win—a prominent national strategy hub for donors aligned with Democratic causes—voiced strong support for Harris. Gavito emphasized Harris’s exemplary track record and her refined positions on critical issues such as voting rights, reproductive freedoms, and economic governance. “We are ready to lock in and support Vice President Harris in her new role,” Gavito remarked. “She’s had a stellar track record in all of her political positions. She has refined her case for voting rights, her case for reproductive freedoms, her ability to govern on the economy, and she’s ready.”

Harris initially launched her 2020 presidential primary campaign in January 2019 with a rally in Oakland that attracted around 20,000 attendees. However, her campaign faced challenges as fundraising and poll numbers began to wane. She withdrew from the race in December 2019, prior to the primaries. Despite a contentious debate exchange with Biden, Harris was selected as his running mate in August 2020. While her vice presidency experienced varied levels of success, she gained significant prominence as the 2024 campaign approached, particularly through her outreach to Black and Asian American voters—demographics crucial to the Biden administration’s base.

As doubts about Biden’s ability to continue on the ticket emerged, support for Harris grew among Democrats. Many public and private voices, including several Black lawmakers and Democratic strategists, advocated for Harris as the most qualified candidate to succeed Biden. They argued that passing over Harris would risk alienating the party’s base, particularly Black women voters, who form a significant portion of the Democratic electorate.

Biden, even as he initially expressed his intention to remain in the race, affirmed his confidence in Harris’s qualifications. During a July 11 press conference, Biden underscored Harris’s readiness for the presidency. “From the very beginning, I made no bones about that,” Biden said. “She is qualified to be president. That’s why I picked her.”

Trump’s campaign has escalated its criticism of Harris, aiming to portray her as an extremist. This intensified scrutiny from Trump and his campaign, alongside his running mate Senator JD Vance of Ohio, underscores the contentious nature of the upcoming election.

Despite lingering skepticism about Harris’s candidacy, recent research and polling conducted by Way to Win in battleground states indicate that Harris has received a “significant boost” among younger voters, voters of color, and women—demographics where Biden had struggled. Gavito highlighted Harris’s success in energizing these key voter segments, reflecting her growing appeal and political strength.

The potential selection of Harris as the Democratic nominee would likely circumvent a contentious floor fight at the convention and offer substantial financial advantages. Campaign finance law experts have suggested that Biden’s campaign war chest could be transferred to Harris, due to her status as his running mate, thereby providing her with a significant financial advantage over any other potential candidates who would need to secure new funding for their campaigns.

As the 2024 presidential race continues to develop, Harris’s candidacy represents a critical juncture for the Democratic Party. Her ascent to the forefront of the campaign promises to shape the party’s strategy and direction as the general election approaches, marking a transformative moment in American politics.
