First Coast Expressway SunPass and Gantry Billing
The First Coast Expressway, SR 23, uses cashless electronic gantries. According to FDOT’s First Coast Expressway page, the gantries accept SunPass or bill through a Toll-By-Plate invoice.
Once completed, the limited-access toll road is planned to run about 46 miles from I-10 in Duval County to I-95 in St. Johns County through Clay County. FDOT lists the segment from Blanding Boulevard to I-10 as completed in summer 2019, with toll collection beginning July 13, 2019.
FDOT also lists construction of the new St. Johns River bridge as having started in 2023, with completion estimated in 2030.
A First Coast Expressway SunPass trip therefore has a Toll-By-Plate invoice fallback if the gantry does not receive a transponder. Do not apply that rule to I-295. The I-295 Express Lanes still require a transponder during toll hours and do not offer Toll-By-Plate.

The report also described two scheduled resurfacing projects: one between the Nassau County line and the First Coast Expressway, with a spring 2024 start and fall 2025 expected completion, and another between Chaffee Road and I-295, with a summer 2024 start and early 2026 expected completion. Those dates reflect what was scheduled in the 2024 report, not a current construction-status statement.
News4JAX said drivers could visit FDOT.gov/legal and select the claims tab to file a damage claim. If the crack began on that corridor, keep road-damage documentation separate from the SunPass replacement steps and from any glass coverage discussion. Wait until the glass work and any recalibration are finished before bonding a new Mini. For a PRO, return it to the windshield according to its instructions. Then check that the toll account identifies the intended transponder and vehicle before using a transponder-required lane.
Camera Recalibration in the Same Visit where the procedure can be done on site
Replacing an equipped windshield changes the glass-mounted bracket that establishes the forward-facing ADAS camera’s position. Vehicle procedures may require that camera to be recalibrated after the new glass is set. Recalibration restores the camera’s specified relationship with the vehicle rather than testing whether a warning light happens to be off.
The camera housing near the mirror needs its matching bracket on the replacement windshield, and the vehicle’s procedure determines the calibration method. Keep the SunPass off the glass until installation and any recalibration are finished; the camera and rain-sensor hardware share the mirror area with the transponder’s mounting zone.
The urethane also needs enough time to reach its specified drive-away strength. Adhesive system, temperature and humidity can affect that timing. Follow the drive-away instruction provided at the appointment and avoid disturbing the new windshield while the bond develops.
