A SunPass sticker on a new windshield in Largo needs a plan before the damaged glass is removed. First identify whether the device is an adhesive windshield tag or a portable transponder, photograph its visible details, note its account status and ask the issuing toll agency whether that exact device can move to replacement glass. Do not assume a peeled sticker will still read. Follow the issuer’s mounting instructions on the new windshield, then confirm that the device is active and assigned to the correct vehicle and plate before entering a SunPass-only lane.

FDOT’s Gateway Expressway project record lists Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park and St. Petersburg. The tolled roadways opened April 26, 2024, toll collection began May 3, 2024, and all construction was completed as of June 30, 2025.

The local timing changed again on August 22, 2026. FDOT says the new Howard Frankland Bridge I-275 Express Lanes began collecting electronic SunPass tolls 24 hours a day, seven days a week on that date, according to the Howard Frankland Bridge project page.

Why Largo’s Express-Lane Map Changes the Timing

The Gateway Expressway created two tolled roadway connections affecting trips from Largo and nearby Pinellas County communities. One provides a direct connection between U.S. 19 and I-275. The other connects the Bayside Bridge, north of 49th Street N, with I-275.

Gateway tolls are collected electronically through the SunPass prepaid toll program, with TOLL-BY-PLATE also available on the new SR 690 and SR 686A roadways. FDOT states that the project’s I-275 Express Lanes accept SunPass only. Cash and TOLL-BY-PLATE are not accepted there, and drivers without an active SunPass or compatible transponder are subject to a daily violation charge.

Those Gateway Expressway SunPass rules remove the backup choices a driver might expect on another toll road. A plate cannot substitute for an inactive windshield tag in those express lanes. If the old device leaves with the windshield, choose a route that does not require the SunPass-only lanes until the account and transponder are ready.

Treat the first post-installation trip as having three separate requirements: the urethane must reach its stated safe drive-away point, required camera recalibration must be complete, and the toll device must be active. One does not confirm either of the others. An active account does not shorten adhesive cure time, and completed camera work does not prove that a toll gantry will read the tag.

SunPass Sticker, New Windshield: Identify the Device First

A windshield sticker sits flat against the glass as an adhesive device. A portable transponder has a unit or mount designed to be removed. Check the device name shown in the toll account rather than deciding by size, color or memory.

  • Photograph the device’s visible face and its location on the old glass.
  • Record the transponder number shown in the account without lifting the sticker.
  • Confirm whether the account describes the device as active, inactive or replaced.
  • Check that the listed vehicle and license plate match the car receiving glass.
  • Save the issuer’s current instructions for that exact device model.

A SunPass Mini on a new windshield should be handled according to the instructions for the Mini listed in your account. SunPass after windshield replacement is partly a glass issue and partly an account issue. The issuing agency, not the appearance of the adhesive, determines whether the device can be moved or needs replacement.

Let the Issuer Make the Transfer Decision

If the issuer confirms that the device can move, ask for the prescribed removal and remounting process. If the issuer tells you to replace the SunPass sticker after windshield replacement, arrange the new device and follow the account steps it provides. Do not peel an adhesive tag while waiting for an answer; removing it as a test can leave you without a mounted device or a verified transfer plan.

For a company, leased or shared vehicle, identify who controls the toll account before changing anything. The account holder may need to order or activate the device. The useful records for the glass appointment are the device type, visible identifier, mounting location and issuer instructions.

Once the damage calls for Windshield Replacement, use the Largo mobile-service page to request the glass appointment. Bang AutoGlass replaces the windshield, while transponder activation and account changes remain with the toll issuer.

Florida Permits the Device, Not a Blocked Forward View

Florida Statute 316.2952 permits a device issued by a governmental entity for electronic toll payments to be attached to a windshield. It also requires every windshield wiper to be maintained in good working order. A violation of the section is classified as a noncriminal nonmoving traffic infraction.

The statute permits a transparent sunscreening strip at the top of the windshield only when it does not encroach on the driver’s direct forward view. That separate permission does not supply a universal toll-device coordinate. Keep the transponder outside your forward view and use the location specified for the device and vehicle.

After the glass is installed, confirm that each wiper sweeps normally and does not catch trim or an attached item. Do not place a toll tag where a wiper, mirror housing, camera cover or sensor component will contact it. A legally permitted device still has to be positioned without obstructing the driver.

The statute answers whether a government-issued toll device may be attached. It does not say whether a particular sticker survives removal or will communicate with the toll system from a guessed mounting point. Legal attachment and reliable operation are separate checks.

Give the Camera, Sensor and Toll Tag Separate Space

The answer to where to put SunPass on a windshield starts with the toll issuer’s placement diagram. The second reference is the equipment already attached near the mirror. A forward-facing ADAS camera, rain sensor, mirror housing and other hardware can occupy the same general part of the glass where a driver might otherwise place a tag.

Do not copy the old location automatically. Identify the replacement windshield’s camera opening, brackets, sensor pads and black frit areas before exposing an adhesive backing. If the issuer’s specified location appears to conflict with vehicle equipment, ask the issuer or consult the vehicle instructions instead of improvising.

  1. Wait until the replacement glass is set and its camera and sensor components have been identified.
  2. Read the mounting directions for the exact transponder model shown in your account.
  3. Sit in your normal driving position and keep the device outside your direct forward view.
  4. Do not cover the camera aperture, rain-sensor pad or another mounted component.
  5. Clean and mount the device only as directed, then photograph its final position.

Toll transponder placement on a new windshield is not the same task as bonding the windshield or calibrating the camera. If the mounting point is uncertain, pause before applying the adhesive. A misplaced tag can create another issuer conversation, while an object in front of a camera or sensor can interfere with that vehicle component.

For a Florida toll sticker on a new windshield, the permitted top sunscreening strip is not an automatic mounting zone. The law allows the strip under stated visibility limits, but the toll agency still controls the device instructions. Use both requirements rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.

Keep Toll Setup Separate From Camera Recalibration

A toll transponder and an ADAS camera share the windshield but perform unrelated jobs. Mounting or activating the toll device does not calibrate the camera. Camera recalibration does not activate a SunPass account, confirm a plate or test a transponder.

The windshield replacement sequence removes the damaged glass, prepares the metal bonding edge and applies a fresh urethane bead before the replacement glass is set. Bang AutoGlass installs OEM-quality glass, and the selected part must match vehicle equipment such as the camera bracket, rain-sensor provisions or a head-up display when present. A portable toll device should be removed according to its issuer’s directions before the old glass comes out.

Replacing the windshield can change the camera’s relationship to the glass and road scene. When the vehicle requires it, Bang AutoGlass performs ADAS Calibration in the same visit. The required calibration procedure depends on the vehicle, so toll-tag placement should never be used to guess the camera’s viewing area or calibration method.

Fresh urethane also needs its specified cure interval before the vehicle can be driven. The safe drive-away point depends on the adhesive system and installation conditions; follow the time given for your vehicle. Our first-24-hours windshield instructions cover that wait.

Run a Gateway Readiness Check Before I-275

FDOT describes SunPass as a prepaid toll program. Before returning to an express lane, compare the physical or mounted device with the account rather than relying on an old email, receipt or windshield photo.

  • The transponder identifier matches the device now in the vehicle.
  • The issuer shows the device as active rather than pending or replaced.
  • The correct vehicle and license plate are attached to the account.
  • The prepaid balance or account payment setting is current.
  • The device is mounted according to the issuer’s model-specific instructions.
  • The old device was deactivated if the issuer required that step.

SunPass for the I-275 Express Lanes near Largo must be active before entry. FDOT says cash and TOLL-BY-PLATE are not fallback payment methods in those lanes. Drivers without an active SunPass or compatible transponder are subject to a daily violation charge, so the lane itself should not be treated as a transponder test.

If SunPass is not working after windshield replacement, start with the transponder identifier, active status, vehicle and plate. Then compare the mounted position with the issuer’s diagram. A portable device may be present but linked incorrectly, while a newly issued tag may be mounted before its account status is ready.

Contact the issuer when the account and physical device do not match or when the correct mounting position remains unclear. Until the issuer confirms the problem is resolved, use a route that does not depend on the SunPass-only express lanes. Repeated lane entry does not diagnose an account or mounting issue.

The same check now matters for SunPass on the Howard Frankland express lanes. FDOT says the new bridge’s I-275 Express Lanes collect tolls electronically through SunPass around the clock, so a Largo driver planning that trip should settle the device status before setting out.

Put the Glass Claim and Toll Device on Separate Tracks

Florida Statute 627.7288 says the deductible provisions of a motor vehicle policy providing comprehensive coverage do not apply to windshield damage. The provision names the windshield only and does not discuss replacement or activation of a toll transponder. Our Florida auto-glass insurance page explains the policy check; before any work, Bang AutoGlass verifies coverage, helps you with the claim and bills the insurer directly when coverage applies. General info, not legal or insurance advice — coverage varies by policy.

Prepare the Car and Toll Details for the Largo Visit

For windshield replacement in Largo, FL, mention the device attached to the old glass when requesting service.

  • Have the vehicle identification number, year, make and model ready.
  • Take photos of the crack, impact point and the full mirror area.
  • Record the device model, visible identifier and current account status.
  • Save the issuer’s transfer, replacement and mounting directions.
  • Include policy details with the SunPass records if you want a coverage check; we verify coverage before any work on the Largo windshield.
  • Plan a non-express-lane route until the transponder is confirmed active.

The car can stay at your Largo home, workplace or another safe parking spot while we come to it. Leave enough room around the front of the vehicle for the old windshield to be removed and the replacement glass to be set. Bang AutoGlass does not need your toll-account password to replace the glass.

When the vehicle requires camera recalibration, it is completed in the same visit. The glass work carries the Bang Lifetime Workmanship Warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. If an upcoming Gateway or Howard Frankland trip controls your timing, ask about next-day availability in most areas.

Before Largo Drivers Reenter I-275’s SunPass-Only Lanes

Who decides whether the SunPass sticker can move off my old windshield?

The toll agency that issued the device makes that decision. Check the model shown in your account and ask for its current removal, replacement and mounting instructions. Do not peel the sticker to test it. Bang AutoGlass replaces the glass, but the issuer controls transponder activation and account status.

Can I use Gateway’s I-275 Express Lanes before the new tag is active?

Do not use the lanes to test an unresolved transponder. FDOT says the I-275 Express Lanes accept SunPass only; cash and TOLL-BY-PLATE are not accepted. A driver without an active SunPass or compatible transponder is subject to a daily violation charge. Use another route until the issuer confirms the device is active.

My new windshield has a camera housing behind the mirror. Where can the toll device go?

Follow the toll issuer’s placement diagram while keeping the device outside your direct forward view. Do not cover the camera aperture, rain-sensor pad or another vehicle component. If the instructed position conflicts with that equipment, contact the issuer or consult the vehicle instructions instead of guessing at another mounting point.

Can I arrange windshield replacement near me in Largo with SunPass still unresolved?

Yes. Bang AutoGlass comes to a Largo home, workplace or other location where the vehicle is parked safely. Photograph the mounted device and save its account details before the old glass is removed. The toll issuer, not the glass appointment, determines whether the device can be moved, replaced or reactivated.

Does Howard Frankland express-lane tolling run all day after August 22, 2026?

Yes. FDOT says tolls on the new Howard Frankland Bridge I-275 Express Lanes are collected electronically through the SunPass prepaid toll program 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That schedule applies to the express lanes, so confirm the transponder before choosing them after windshield replacement.
