New Windshield Means SunPass Prep for Gateway Trips in Pinellas Park

A new windshield changes your SunPass plan before the old glass is removed. If the transponder is an adhesive sticker, do not assume it can be peeled off and reused. Record its brand and product name, obtain the toll provider’s replacement instructions and make sure the correct device is active before relying on the I-275 express lanes.

In Pinellas Park the route decides how much that matters. FDOT accepts SunPass or Toll-By-Plate on SR 690 and SR 686A, the two Gateway Expressway roads, but the tolled I-275 express lanes take SunPass only. Toll-By-Plate and cash are not accepted there.

Keep the toll-account task separate from the glass appointment. Tell us about the sticker, the camera housing near the mirror and any special windshield features when booking.

Plan the New Windshield and SunPass Around US 19

SR 690 is the Gateway Expressway’s tolled link from US 19 to I-275, built in the median of 118th Avenue North. SR 686A runs from the Bayside Bridge toward I-275, mostly in the median of Roosevelt Boulevard. FDOT lists Pinellas Park among the project cities; both toll roads and the tolled I-275 express lanes opened at noon on April 26, 2024.

Before the damaged windshield comes out, write down the first toll trip you expect to make after service.

Trace the full trip before deciding Toll-By-Plate is enough. Entering SR 690 from US 19 and later choosing an I-275 express lane changes the accepted method. If activation is pending, save a route that avoids the express lanes and give that route to anyone else who may drive the vehicle after service.

The FDOT Gateway Expressway project page provides the road-specific rules. After setting your toll plan, use the Pinellas Park mobile service page to arrange the glass appointment. The Windshield Replacement service page explains the work performed on the vehicle.

Gateway Toll Rules Change at the I-275 Express Lanes

Every Gateway toll is collected electronically, but FDOT does not accept the same methods on every road.

SR 690 Toll-By-Plate can cover the gap while the new tag is pending, but FDOT does not extend it to the I-275 express lanes. Do not enter those lanes to find out whether an old, damaged or newly mounted sticker works; check its status with the toll provider first.

After mobile service, three separate things must be done before that first trip: the urethane’s safe drive-away interval, any required camera work and a toll method that fits the road.

Do Not Leave the Toll Plan Until an Evacuation Day

Windshield and tag timing deserves extra margin when evacuation planning is active. Pinellas County bases evacuation zones on storm surge risk and provides its Know Your Zone lookup at kyz.pinellas.gov. The county also says residents of mobile homes and manufactured homes must always evacuate because of the risk from wind.

Pinellas County says evacuees do not need to travel far, advises leaving earlier for an easier drive when going farther and directs drivers to fl511.com for current road conditions. Before the old glass is removed, save one route that matches an available toll method and one alternate. If the new tag is not active, exclude the SunPass-only express lanes even when the route uses SR 690.

The vehicle also cannot leave until the urethane’s safe drive-away requirement has been met. For the glass decisions that belong in a storm plan, read our article about a cracked windshield before a Pinellas Park evacuation. Follow active county instructions rather than trying to fit a glass appointment into an evacuation timetable.

The Sticker on the Old Glass Is Not a Reusable Mount

Once the old windshield leaves the vehicle, the sticker must either come off or leave with the glass. Start the replacement process before the appointment rather than trying to preserve the tag while the windshield is being removed.

The Central Florida Expressway Authority’s installation guidance gives a firm rule for its E-PASS Sticker: once removed, the sticker no longer functions and cannot be reattached. That rule is written for E-PASS. It does not settle the policy for every SunPass product, so go by the name printed on your own device.

If your account uses E-PASS, ask CFX how to get and activate a sticker for the new windshield. Handling SunPass after windshield replacement works the same way: for a SunPass Mini on a new windshield, follow SunPass’s current replacement and activation process. A sticker that came off in one piece is not proof it will read on the new glass.

Photograph the front of the tag and record any identifying number before service. If the label is unreadable, use the toll account to identify the device tied to the vehicle. A removable unit and an adhesive sticker require different handling, so follow the instructions for the exact model rather than improvising with tape or extra adhesive.

Finish the Glass Work Before Picking the Mounting Point

CFX directs E-PASS Sticker users to place the device on the windshield behind or below the rearview mirror. That guidance establishes a general mounting zone, but the same part of a modern windshield can contain a forward-facing ADAS camera, a rain sensor, a mirror bracket or a large plastic housing.

  1. Wait until the windshield is installed and any required ADAS recalibration is finished.
  2. Inspect the area around and below the mirror for cameras, sensors and housings.
  3. Read both the vehicle manual and the toll provider’s instructions for placement restrictions.
  4. Select an allowed spot behind or below the mirror that does not cover a camera’s viewing area or another sensor.
  5. Apply and activate the sticker exactly as its provider directs before using a transponder-only lane.

Where to put SunPass on the windshield depends on two sets of instructions. The toll agency defines where its device can read properly, while the vehicle manufacturer defines areas that must remain clear. A location that looks tidy from the driver’s seat can still sit in front of a camera through the glass.

Mounting a SunPass sticker on a new windshield comes after the glass, camera work and placement checks. Urethane timing is separate: the adhesive that bonds the windshield needs its specified safe drive-away interval whether or not the toll tag is active.

Coated Glass Can Explain a Missed Transponder Read

Sticker condition and account status are not the only reasons a toll reader might miss a device. CFX warns that metal-oxidized windshields can inhibit transponder reads. It also tells drivers with polarized windshields to contact customer support before installing a transponder.

A coating-related read problem can appear only after the glass changes, even when the tag is mounted near the mirror. Do not diagnose that result from the windshield’s color or reflections. Confirm the glass configuration, then ask the vehicle dealer and the toll provider where the device should be mounted on that type of windshield.

Part matching matters before installation. Give us the VIN and identify any camera, rain sensor, head-up display, acoustic layer or solar feature you know the vehicle has. Bang AutoGlass uses OEM-quality glass, and the selected windshield must match the vehicle’s required features rather than merely fit the opening.

If a Transponder Is Not Reading After Windshield Replacement

  • Confirm that the toll account shows the intended device as active for the vehicle.
  • Check the license plate and vehicle details associated with the account.
  • Compare the mounting point with the provider’s current installation diagram.
  • Ask whether a metal-oxidized or polarized windshield changes the approved location.

Do not repeatedly peel and relocate an adhesive sticker. Contact the provider before disturbing it, and do not use the SunPass-only I-275 express lanes as a test route.

The SR 690 Replacement-Day Checklist

For windshield replacement in Pinellas Park, Florida, check the vehicle and the toll account at each of three stages.

Before the Vehicle Is Parked for Service

  • Record the transponder brand, model and identifying number while they remain readable.
  • Ask the toll provider how to replace that exact sticker and when the new device can be activated.
  • Confirm that the correct plate and vehicle details appear in the toll account.
  • Classify the first planned route as SR 690, SR 686A or the SunPass-only I-275 express lanes.
  • Provide the vehicle’s year, make, model and VIN, then mention any camera, rain sensor, head-up display or specialty glass.
  • Choose a Pinellas Park parking spot with room around the front of the vehicle and stable conditions for glass work.

Photograph the mirror area as well as the tag. Clear loose items from the dashboard, remove anything hanging from the mirror and have the vehicle keys available. Keep any replacement toll device packaged so adhesive is not exposed before its final mounting point is known.

While the Windshield Is Being Replaced

Keep the replacement toll sticker off the glass. The damaged laminated windshield is removed, the bonding area is prepared and the OEM-quality glass is set with automotive urethane. Because Bang AutoGlass is mobile-only, your vehicle stays with you at its safe parking location rather than being taken elsewhere.

Leave the dashboard, mirror area and cowl accessible during the work. Do not choose the toll-tag position until the mirror cover and sensor hardware are back in place. That final view shows which portion of the glass must remain open for the camera, rain sensor and other equipment.

If the vehicle requires camera-based recalibration after replacement, Bang AutoGlass performs it during the same visit. Installation workmanship is covered by the Bang Lifetime Workmanship Warranty for as long as you own the vehicle.

Before the First Toll Trip

  1. Observe the safe drive-away interval required for the urethane used on the vehicle.
  2. Mount the transponder according to the provider’s directions and confirm its activation status.
  3. Recheck the account’s plate and vehicle information.
  4. Use SR 690 or SR 686A only under an accepted method, and stay out of the I-275 express lanes until SunPass is ready.

Check the device status through the provider before departure rather than judging it by how firmly the sticker is attached.

Glass coverage and toll setup require separate checks. Florida Statute 627.7288 says the deductible provisions of a comprehensive motor vehicle policy shall not apply to windshield damage. Bang AutoGlass verifies coverage before any work, helps you with the claim and bills the insurer directly. Use our Florida windshield insurance information to prepare your policy questions. General info, not legal or insurance advice — coverage varies by policy.

Leave the Mirror-Area Camera a Clear View

Do not assign the mirror area to the toll sticker before the glass work is complete. A forward-facing camera sees through a specific section of the windshield, and replacement can change its position or optical path. The vehicle maker’s procedure controls the recalibration decision; when that procedure requires it, we provide ADAS Calibration during the same visit.

The toll sticker does not cause the calibration requirement, but poor placement can obstruct a camera or sensor afterward. Start with the toll provider’s approved zone behind or below the mirror, then rule out the camera housing, the camera’s viewing area and the rain sensor before applying adhesive.

A head-up display creates a separate glass-matching issue because its projected image depends on the windshield configuration.

Toll validation and ADAS calibration also prove different things. A successful toll read does not confirm that lane-departure or forward-collision functions were calibrated, and a completed calibration does not confirm that a newly mounted SunPass is active.

Pair the Pinellas Park Appointment With a Valid Toll Plan

Use the Pinellas Park service page to request a no-obligation quote for the damaged windshield. Have the VIN, year, make and model ready, along with the address where the vehicle can remain parked safely during mobile service.

State whether the toll sticker is still on the cracked glass, and mention the mirror-area camera, rain sensor, head-up display or known coated windshield.

The glass can be replaced at your Pinellas Park home, workplace or another safe parking location while the toll-tag replacement remains pending.

New appointments can be requested 24/7 at (877) 994-5277. Next-day availability is offered in most areas, and installs run Monday through Saturday, 8am to 6pm.

Pinellas Park's US 19 Toll-Tag Check

My cracked windshield comes out tomorrow. Which toll-tag details should I save tonight?

Save a clear photo of the sticker, its product name, any identifying number and the plate listed on the account. For the new windshield and SunPass setup, check the provider’s current replacement and activation instructions before the old glass is removed. Do not peel the sticker merely to test it; CFX says its E-PASS Sticker stops working after removal and cannot be reattached.

Does SR 690 Toll-By-Plate also cover the I-275 express lanes?

No. FDOT lists SunPass or Toll-By-Plate for SR 690 and SR 686A, but the tolled I-275 express lanes accept SunPass only. Confirm that the intended SunPass device is active before entering those lanes. A plate associated with your account does not change the express-lane rule.

The toll tag stopped reading after new glass. Which check comes first?

Confirm that the device is active and tied to the correct vehicle and plate. Then compare its position with the provider’s mounting diagram. If those details are correct, ask whether the windshield has a metal-oxidized or polarized configuration; CFX warns that those glass features can affect transponder installation or reading.

Can the cracked windshield be replaced at my Pinellas Park workplace before the new tag arrives?

Yes. The toll sticker does not need to be present for the windshield installation. Bang AutoGlass can come to a safe parking location in Pinellas Park, and camera-based ADAS recalibration is completed during the same visit when the vehicle requires it. Keep the replacement tag packaged until the glass and any required recalibration are finished.
