Sandblasted Glass Is a Wear Problem, Not a Damage Problem — Which Is Why Nobody Catches It
Windshield pitting is thousands of microscopic craters ground into the outer glass surface by airborne sand, road grit and gravel over tens of thousands of miles. There is no chip to point at and no crack to measure, so it never fails a walkaround and nobody ever tells you about it. You notice it one night on the 101 when an oncoming truck's headlights bloom into a white sheet across the whole lower third of the glass and you realize you cannot see the lane line. That is pitting, and once it has reached that stage the only fix is new glass. Pitting cannot be repaired, polished out, or filled.
Arizona produces pitting faster than almost anywhere. I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson runs through open desert with fine sand blowing across the roadbed year-round, monsoon haboobs push that sand at highway speeds into the face of anything driving through it, and the constant construction and shoulder work along the Loop 101 and Loop 202 corridors puts gravel under tires that lift it straight into the car behind. Add the temperature swing — glass that hits 140°F in a Chandler parking lot and gets hosed with 70°F water at a car wash — and the outer surface takes a beating no Midwest windshield ever sees. How to Tell If Your Windshield Is Actually Pitted
Pitting is invisible in flat daylight, which is why it goes unaddressed for years. You have to look for it deliberately, at the right angle, from the driver's seat — not standing outside the car.
- Park facing the sun about an hour before sunset, or facing a wall with a bright light angled across the glass.
- Sit in your normal driving position and look through the glass, not at it, focusing on something far away.
- Sweep your eyes across the driver's-side sweep area — the arc the wiper clears directly in front of you.
- Watch for a fine haze of white sparkle that moves with your head. Each sparkle is a pit catching light.
- Run a fingernail lightly across the outside of that same area. Heavy pitting feels like fine sandpaper instead of glass.
Light sparkle at a low sun angle is normal on any windshield with miles on it. What matters is whether it interferes with seeing.
The Line Between Cosmetic and Unsafe
Glare from pitting is a real optical problem, not a preference. Each pit scatters incoming light instead of passing it through, so a single headlight becomes a small starburst and a hundred headlights become a wall. It gets worse in exactly the conditions where you need vision most: at night, in rain, into a low winter sun on an eastbound morning commute, and behind a dirty windshield where dust settles into the pits and refuses to wipe out.
These are the signals we treat as replacement territory rather than watch-and-wait:
- Oncoming headlights bloom into a haze that covers part of a lane rather than staying a defined point of light.
- You have started avoiding night driving, or you consciously drop speed at dusk without a clear reason.
- Wipers no longer clear the glare — the streak stays after a clean pass, because the roughness is in the glass, not on it.
- Low sun on I-10 or the 60 washes out the road entirely for several seconds.
- The wiper sweep area feels visibly frosted compared to the untouched glass near the A-pillars.
Compare the driver's sweep area against the far passenger corner. That corner sees the least abrasion and gives you an honest baseline of what your own glass looked like new. If the difference is obvious, the glass has done its service life.
What About Wiper Damage and Water Spots?
Two other conditions get mistaken for pitting. Wiper scoring is a set of arcing scratch lines from a torn blade or a metal wiper arm dragging on glass — it follows the sweep path in curves rather than scattering evenly, and Arizona heat destroys rubber blades fast enough that this is common here. Hard-water etching from sprinklers and mineral-heavy tap water leaves round spots that sit on the surface; a clay bar or a proper mineral remover takes those off. Pitting does not come off, and no polishing compound removes it without distorting the glass optically. If a service offers to buff pits out of a windshield, that is a distortion risk, not a repair.
ADAS Cameras See Through the Same Glass You Do
If your vehicle has lane keeping, automatic emergency braking or adaptive cruise, the forward camera looks through the windshield — usually through the area just behind the mirror, which sits inside the abrasion zone. Heavy pitting scatters light into that camera the same way it scatters headlights into your eyes, and it is a known contributor to sun-glare dropouts and intermittent lane-keep faults. When that glass is replaced, the camera has to be recalibrated to the new windshield; this is not optional and it is not something to skip. What Drives the Job on a Pitted Windshield
Because pitting is wear rather than impact damage, you often have time to plan the job properly instead of reacting to a crack spreading across your line of sight. Use it. The variables that determine what glass your car needs are the acoustic interlayer, solar or infrared coating, heads-up display, rain and light sensors, heated wiper park, and the specific ADAS bracket your camera mounts to. HUD and IR-coated glass in particular are not interchangeable with plain laminated glass — installing the wrong one produces a ghosted display or a heat-soaked cabin. Part availability varies by vehicle, which is the single biggest driver of scheduling. Be aware that gradual pitting and a single rock strike are treated differently by comprehensive policies, and how a pitting claim lands depends on your specific coverage. Two Arizona statutes are worth knowing. A.R.S. § 20-264 requires insurers to offer an optional zero-deductible full-glass add-on — it is an offer, not an automatic entitlement, so it only helps if you actually elected it. A.R.S. § 20-469 gives you the right to choose your own shop; no carrier can require you to use a particular one.
