Most wet carpets are not a glass problem
We have done more than 17,000 auto glass jobs across Arizona and Florida, and we have been called out for "the windshield is leaking" many, many times. In a large share of those visits, the glass was sealed fine. The water was coming from a clogged cowl drain, a sunroof drain tube, a torn plastic sheet behind a door panel, or an air conditioning condensate hose that backed up. This post is how to find out which one you have before you spend money on glass you may not need.
Start with the single most useful clue: where the water actually collects. Water travels along body seams and wiring harnesses, so the puddle is rarely directly under the entry point — but the pattern still narrows it down fast.
Read the location first
Passenger front footwell, clear and odorless, wet even when it has not rained. That is almost always the AC evaporator drain. The evaporator sits behind the dash and drips condensate through a rubber hose out the floor pan. In Tampa, Clearwater and Miami, a car running its AC through August humidity can produce a startling volume of condensate — and mold, sand or a wasp nest in that hose sends all of it inside instead of onto the pavement. Look under the car after twenty minutes of idling with the AC on. If there is no drip line on the ground, the hose is blocked. That is a shop-vac-and-a-piece-of-weed-trimmer-line fix, not a glass job.
Either front footwell, only after rain, sometimes with a musty smell. Now you are looking at the cowl — the vented plastic panel between the hood and the base of the windshield. It is designed to take on water and drain it out through channels at each end. Palo verde and mesquite litter in Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler, plus the fine grit that monsoon storms deposit, packs those channels solid. In Orlando and Kissimmee it is oak tassels and pine needles doing the same thing. Once the cowl fills, water rises above the drain line and finds its way past the HVAC intake seal or the firewall grommets. It looks exactly like a windshield leak because it enters right at the base of the glass. Pull the wiper arms and the cowl cover, clear it out by hand, and check again.
Headliner corners, A-pillar trim, or a drip onto your leg from near the dome light. That is sunroof drains, not the sunroof glass. A factory sunroof is not sealed — the tray under it catches water and routes it through four small tubes down the A- and C-pillars. Blocked tubes overflow the tray into the headliner. Pour a cup of water into the open sunroof tray and watch for drips behind the front tires. If nothing comes out, the tubes are clogged. Genuine glass-side problems here are different: a cracked panel, a failed panel bond, or a torn perimeter seal on the moving glass, which is when sunroof glass replacement is the actual answer.
Rear footwell or the bottom of a door card, with the carpet wet only along the sill. Suspect the door's vapor barrier. Behind every door panel is a plastic or foam sheet glued down with butyl tape. Water that runs down the inside of the door glass is supposed to hit that barrier and exit through weep holes at the bottom of the door. If a previous repair left the sheet peeled, or the weep holes are packed with coastal salt residue and dirt from Fort Lauderdale or St. Petersburg driving, water goes over the sill instead. Re-seating the barrier fixes most of these. If the door glass itself is cracked, delaminated, or riding out of its run channel, that is a door glass replacement conversation.
Trunk, spare tire well, or cargo floor. Check the taillight housing gaskets and the trunk lid weatherstrip before the glass. Pull the spare and look for a tidemark. Genuine leaks around rear glass and around fixed quarter glass do happen, especially on hatchbacks and SUVs where the glass carries a wiper motor or a defroster connector through the panel, but they are less common than the trim causes.
The test that actually isolates it
Do this in order. Stop as soon as water appears.
- Dry the interior completely and lay fresh paper towels along both footwells, under both A-pillars, and in the trunk.
- With the engine off and no hose running, check the cowl and sunroof tray for debris and clear them.
- Run a garden hose at low pressure on the roof only, for three minutes. Water inside now means sunroof drains or a roof seam.
- Move to the base of the windshield and flood the cowl area for three minutes. Water inside now means cowl drains or the HVAC intake seal.
- Run the hose across the windshield glass itself and up the A-pillars, avoiding the cowl. Water inside now points to the glass bond.
- Finish with the doors and the rear glass, one panel at a time.
Never use a pressure washer for this. It will force water past healthy seals and give you a false positive on every panel you point it at.
What a real glass leak looks like
When the urethane bond around a windshield has actually failed, there are usually corroborating signs. You get wind noise at highway speed that was not there before — I-10 and Loop 101 in Phoenix, or I-4 through Orlando, will make it obvious. You see a stain or a rust line where the water tracks down the inside edge of the A-pillar trim, always in the same spot. And there is very often a history: the glass was replaced at some point, or the vehicle was in a collision. Factory-bonded windshields rarely start leaking on their own. Failures come from a rushed installation, a contaminated pinch weld, or corrosion under the bond line. Where the pinch weld is rusted through, the metal has to be treated before new glass goes in, or the new bond will fail the same way. Arizona heat is a real factor here too. Glass surface temperatures in a Phoenix or Tucson parking lot climb well past what most people assume, and a bond that was marginal from the start does not survive many summers of that expansion and contraction. It does not turn a good installation bad — it exposes a bad one faster.
If it does turn out to be the glass
A leaking windshield is not repairable with sealant from the top side. Squeezing urethane or silicone along the visible edge traps water against the pinch weld and hides corrosion; the correct fix is to cut the glass out, prep the opening, and re-bond it. Two coverage notes worth knowing. In Florida, Fla. Stat. § 627.7288 waives the comprehensive deductible on windshield replacement if you carry comprehensive coverage — it applies to the windshield only, not to door, quarter, rear or sunroof glass. In Arizona, A.R.S. § 20-264 requires insurers to offer an optional zero-deductible full-glass add-on; it is something you have to have elected, not an automatic entitlement, so check your policy.
