Why the roads around Anthem are hard on windshields

Anthem sits in unincorporated Maricopa County at the far north end of the Valley, strung along Interstate 17 a little over thirty miles up from downtown Phoenix, with Daisy Mountain on one side and open Sonoran desert in most other directions. Off the freeway, Anthem's own arterials contribute their share. Anthem Way, Daisy Mountain Drive and Gavilan Peak Parkway are wide, fast and lined with desert landscaping, and decomposed granite does not stay in the rock beds when the wind comes up. Head east on the Carefree Highway toward Cave Creek and Carefree, or west toward Lake Pleasant, and you are on a highway with soft shoulders, no barrier and a steady stream of vehicles towing boats and side-by-sides. The desert roads out through New River and Desert Hills add washes that cross the pavement outright, and after a storm those crossings leave a layer of sand and rock sitting exactly where traffic runs.

Then there is the heat, which does most of the actual damage. Anthem sits around two thousand feet, high enough that summer afternoons run a few degrees cooler than Deer Valley or central Phoenix. Glass parked all day at the outlet center off Anthem Way, or in an uncovered space at the community park, gets brutally hot. Then the driver gets in, starts the car and points the air conditioning straight at the inside face of the windshield. The outer layer expands while the inner layer contracts. A chip that has sat quietly since spring picks exactly that instant to run a foot across the driver's view. A forward camera that believes the lane is a few inches to the left of where it really is will tug the wheel the wrong way or brake at the wrong moment. Where your vehicle requires it, ADAS recalibration is performed as part of the replacement job, not booked separately and not handed off to a dealer. Insurance for Arizona drivers

A.R.S. 20-264 requires insurers writing comprehensive coverage in Arizona to offer optional safety-glass coverage carrying no deductible, and that definition reaches windshield, door and window glass. The load-bearing word is offer. The coverage is optional, and it had to be elected at the time the policy was written. It is never automatic, and it is not added to a policy after the rock hits. A.R.S. 20-263 bars an insurer from raising your premium as a result of an accident you did not cause or significantly contribute to. The statute is written about accidents and does not use the word glass. What we can tell you is that a rock thrown off a truck on I-17 is the textbook example of something outside a driver's control, and a not-at-fault comprehensive glass claim is normally treated that way. We would rather say that plainly than promise an outcome your carrier decides.
