Why Cave Creek roads are hard on auto glass

Cave Creek sits at the far northeast corner of Maricopa County, tucked under Black Mountain where the Sonoran Desert foothills meet the Tonto National Forest. It is about a thousand feet higher than central Phoenix, built out of large desert lots and horse property rather than tract subdivisions, and a real share of its residential streets are still dirt. Carefree Highway is the other big one. East of Interstate 17 it is the main east-west connector across the top of the Valley, feeding Cave Creek Road and Tom Darlington Drive; west of I-17 it becomes State Route 74 toward Lake Pleasant and Wickenburg. It carries freight that has just come off I-17 with rock still in the tread, at speeds that turn a pebble into a projectile. Add the commuter run south on Scottsdale Road and Pima Road to Loop 101, plus Dynamite Boulevard into north Scottsdale, and most Cave Creek drivers put highway miles behind heavy vehicles every week.

Then monsoon season rewrites the roads.
