Why Lithia roads are hard on auto glass

That whole corridor has been an active construction zone for years, and construction shoulders stay gritty long after the cones come down. County Road 39 running north toward Plant City and State Road 60 is rural two-lane through farmland, where field sand and clay wash across the pavement with every hard rain and where harvest and packing-house traffic picks up sharply in strawberry season.

Then there is the commute, which quietly does the most damage of all. Almost nobody who lives in Lithia works in Lithia. The daily run is long: out Boyette or Bell Shoals Road to I-75, or up Lithia Pinecrest and across Brandon to the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, or north to I-4 and its rolling construction through the Plant City stretch. Highway miles at highway speed are where ordinary road debris turns into structural damage, and Lithia drivers rack up more of those miles than most people in the Tampa metro.

Florida weather finishes the job. A vehicle parked all afternoon in an open lot at Park Square or a school lot off FishHawk Boulevard has glass under real thermal stress by two o'clock. The storm rolls through, the surface temperature of that glass drops twenty degrees in ten minutes, and a chip that sat quietly since March runs a foot across the driver's side while the car is sitting still. Park under the live oaks along the river instead and you trade heat cycling for falling limbs and acorns. Damage in this climate does not stay the size it started.

Rear glass, back glass, door and quarter glass, and sunroof glass are not covered by it. Those claims run under your policy's ordinary comprehensive terms and your normal deductible, and any shop telling you otherwise is telling you something the statute does not say.

Florida law also changed in 2023. Senate Bill 1002 ended assignment of benefits for motor vehicle glass claims and barred glass shops from offering inducements to get the work.
