Why the west side of Tampa is hard on windshields

Town 'n' Country is unincorporated Hillsborough County, sitting west of the City of Tampa between Old Tampa Bay and the Veterans Expressway, with Tampa International Airport tucked against its southeast corner and the Pinellas county line just past Sheldon Road. It is one of Florida's largest unincorporated communities and fundamentally a commuter place: most people who live here drive out every morning toward the Westshore business district, the airport, downtown Tampa, or across the water into Pinellas. The Westshore Interchange work where Interstate 275 meets State Road 60 sits directly on the commute for a large share of Town 'n' Country, and the Howard Frankland Bridge project across Old Tampa Bay feeds the same traffic through the same bottleneck. Long-running highway jobs mean shifted lanes, barrier wall inches off your mirror, milled pavement and a permanent film of grit on the shoulder that every passing tire flings forward.

Salt is the other half of the story, and the half people forget. The canal-front streets in Bay Crest Park, the neighborhoods off Memorial Highway, and the approach out toward Rocky Point and the causeway all sit in salt-laden air year round. Salt does not break glass, but it works steadily on the metal underneath. Where a windshield was replaced badly in the past, or a leak has been living quietly under the trim, we open a pinch weld on this side of the county and find corrosion a car in a dry inland market would not have at twice the age. What Florida law actually covers, and what it does not

Florida law helps here, but only in one specific place, and the boundary is worth being precise about. Fla. Stat. 627.7288 requires an insurer to waive the comprehensive deductible for windshield replacement when the policy carries comprehensive coverage. That is the entire reach of the statute: it does not extend to rear glass, door or quarter glass, or a sunroof or moonroof. Those follow your policy's ordinary comprehensive terms and your normal deductible.

Florida also changed how glass claims are handled. Senate Bill 1002, effective in 2023, ended assignment of benefits for motor vehicle glass claims and barred shops from offering inducements to win the work. In plain terms, the claim stays yours. You own it, and you choose the shop. We file and document the claim with your carrier and coordinate approval so the call you have to make is short, but the claim and the shop choice remain with you.
