A crack that runs into the glass by your rear view mirror is sitting in front of the Camry's front camera. That windshield gets replaced, under two lines in the 2025 Camry owner's manual: "Replace the windshield if it is damaged or cracked. If the windshield has been replaced, recalibration of the front camera will be necessary."
For a Toyota Camry windshield crack, replace now when the break touches the camera's patch of glass or crosses your view of the road. Those two spots are where the camera rules and each state's unsafe-vehicle law both apply. A crack low on the passenger side leaves the camera alone. That glass still does structural work for the body, though.
Toyota Camry Windshield Crack: Replace Now When It Reaches the Camera
The replace-if-cracked line sits in the manual's list of front-camera precautions. Its neighbors show what the list is for. Fog, condensation or ice on the glass in front of the camera gets cleared with the defogger. Water drops the wipers cannot clear call for a new wiper insert or blade. Every item on that list protects the camera's view through the glass.
Read in that setting, a crack in the camera's view is the clearest case the line covers. A crack across the lower passenger corner is a different case. Judge that one by your own view of the road and by the work the glass does for the body. Your state's unsafe-vehicle rule is the third test.
The excerpt is the 2025 book for the hybrid-only car. A 2018 to 2024 Camry has its own manual, and the quote above belongs to the 2025 model. Owners of the earlier years have two other Toyota documents to lean on. One is the 2018 launch release, and the other is a 2020 service bulletin about the camera.
The second half of the quote is the part owners tend to forget. A new windshield brings a front-camera recalibration with it, so the appointment covers both jobs. Our Toyota camera calibration service page explains that step. When your Camry calls for it, the recalibration is part of our visit wherever the procedure can be done where the car is parked. It adds about 15 to 30 minutes.
Repairing a chip is a different trade from replacing glass, and we do only the replacing; we do not repair chips or cracks. Glass matching and the camera step for this model are laid out on our Toyota windshield replacement page.
The Glass in Front of the Camry's Front Camera
The 2025 manual marks a shaded area of the windshield in front of the front camera in one of its illustrations. Nothing is meant to go on that area: "Do not attach stickers (including transparent stickers) or other items" there. Clear packing tape over a crack is an item under that wording. Taping the crack is ruled out inside the shaded area.
Toyota treats even a clear sticker as something that does not belong in front of the camera. A crack through the same patch puts a permanent line in that view, and no step on the care list removes it. A defogger clears fog and a fresh wiper insert clears water. Neither one closes a break in the glass. Toyota's 2024 Tacoma manual makes a related point for its own truck: a cracked or damaged windshield is among the situations in which its sensors and systems may not operate properly.
A second rule in the Camry's camera precautions covers the parts around the camera. It reads: "Do not modify any parts around the front camera, such as the inside rear view mirror or ceiling". Nearby items in that list rule out striking the camera hard, changing its position or orientation, removing it and taking it apart. The two examples, the mirror and the ceiling, also show where the camera sits. It is high on the glass, near the headliner.
Those precautions turn into a few steps while the cracked glass is still in the car:
- Open the driver support section of your 2025 manual and compare where the crack ends with the shaded area in the illustration.
- Keep tape and other add-ons off the shaded area, even when the crack runs through it.
- Leave the camera, the mirror and the ceiling trim as they are, even when you want a closer look at the crack.
- If the crack is still moving toward the camera, the stages laid out in our post on leaving a cracked windshield too long apply to your car.
The camera is one of several parts tied to this glass. For the full set, read what is bonded into a Toyota windshield.
From the 2018 Redesign to the 2025 Hybrid-Only Camry
Toyota's documents on this windshield come from three points in the car's recent past. Each covers its own years. Match your model year to the right row before you treat a line as yours.
| Toyota document | Years it covers | What it says about the windshield | What it means for a crack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch release for the redesigned car | 2018 Camry | A high-rigidity urethane adhesive joins the windshield and rear window to the body and helps increase body rigidity | The glass and its bond are part of the body's stiffness |
| Service bulletin T-SB-0005-20 | 2018 to 2020 Camry and Camry Hybrid | Some cars may show one or more camera conditions, such as code C1AAE, linked to the camera heater part | A camera message after past glass work points to the camera heater and the glass markings |
| April 2024 release and the 2025 manual excerpt | 2025 Camry (hybrid only) | Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard; replace a damaged or cracked windshield, then recalibrate the front camera | The replace-and-recalibrate line applies directly |
The 2018 row covers the redesigned car's body at launch. For a 2018 owner, it means the windshield was bonded with a stiffness goal in mind. That goal comes back in the structure section further down.
The middle row is narrower than it looks. It concerns the camera's heater part and the markings on the glass. It applies only to the 2018 to 2020 cars it names.
The 2025 row is the newest. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard on the 2025 Camry, according to Toyota's April 2024 release, and that is the year the car went hybrid-only. The manual's camera rules sit in its Safety Sense 3.0 section. The recalibration line sits in that same section.
A 2021 to 2024 Camry sits between the rows. The release and the bulletin cover other years, and the 2025 manual covers the hybrid-only car. For those middle years, weigh a crack by the camera's patch of glass, your view of the road and your state's rules.
Toyota's 2020 Camry Bulletin on Camera Faults and Glass Markings
Toyota issued service bulletin T-SB-0005-20 on January 16, 2020, for the 2018 to 2020 Camry and Camry Hybrid. Some of those cars may show one or more of three conditions. The first is diagnostic trouble code C1AAE. The second is a camera malfunction message on the multi-display, and the third is damage to the hood around the camera.
These conditions may be caused by a forward recognition hood that did not come from Toyota. The bulletin's other name for that hood is a camera heater. It is its own part, separate from the glass.
The bulletin is a technician's repair guide. It announces no recall and makes no finding that this model's windshields crack. Toyota filed it under pre-collision safety, which is why a glass question shows up in a camera document.
The repair steps check two markings in order. First the technician confirms the forward recognition hood came from Toyota. Toyota's hood carries a Toyota part number, shown in the bulletin's Figure 1 as 86461 followed by five more characters. Next comes the windshield. Toyota's own windshield displays a Toyota logo, shown in Figure 3.
The installation notice in the bulletin then turns to the glass itself: "It is strongly recommended that the windshield be replaced with a Toyota Genuine Windshield". In the next line, Toyota warns that windshields from other sources may not work correctly with the vehicle's pre-collision system. We install OEM-quality glass matched to your vehicle's features, and your VIN helps us match the exact part.
For an owner, those steps answer a practical question. A 2018 to 2020 car may show code C1AAE or a camera message. In that case the bulletin's checks start with the heater's part number and then move to the logo on the glass. The 86461 number is what the first of those checks looks for.
Owner reports of glass cracking are a different record from this bulletin. That record is the subject of the post on RAV4 owners filing windshield complaints.
Why a Cracked Windshield Is a Structure Question Too
A windshield does structural work. Toyota's collision-repair magazine made the point in a 2019 article. Windshields contribute to a vehicle's structural integrity, "particularly with relation to the strength of the roof and the front body pillars." That article covers Toyota vehicles in general.
The Camry has its own version of that point. In its 2018 Camry launch release, Toyota put a special high-rigidity urethane adhesive on the windshield and rear window where each meets the body. The adhesive helps the car reach higher body rigidity. In that car, the glass and its bond count toward the body's stiffness.
A crack runs through the glass that is doing this work. The pane still sits in its urethane bead, but the break crosses the part that braces the roof and the front pillars. That is why a crack outside the camera zone and away from your line of sight still deserves a planned replacement. It can wait for an appointment that suits you.
The same logic holds after the swap. A new windshield only takes up its share of the body's work once the urethane has set. The car should stay parked until the adhesive has cured enough for a safe drive, and the technician sets that time.
The bond is also where a poor install shows itself. Our post on how to spot a bad windshield installation before you drive away covers what to look at around the glass before you leave.
Arizona and Florida Rules for Driving on Unsafe Glass
Neither A.R.S. 28-921 nor Fla. Stat. 316.610 sets a crack length. Both turn on whether the car is in a condition that endangers someone. Section 316.610 then adds steps an officer can take at the roadside.
Arizona
Arizona's equipment statute, A.R.S. 28-921, bars driving a vehicle on a highway when it "is in an unsafe condition that endangers a person". The owner may not knowingly let someone else drive it in that condition either. The section sets out no inspection step, repair order or written notice. The prohibition stands alone.
With no notice step in that section, the judgment falls to you as the driver. A crack across your view of the road, or one through the camera's shaded area, is the kind that bears on that test. When the glass is replaced, A.R.S. 28-959(D) forbids putting any material other than safety glass in a windshield. That subsection also names partitions, doors, windows and wind deflectors. A door glass or back window replaced during the same visit falls under the same rule.
Florida
Florida's statute, Fla. Stat. 316.610, makes it a violation to drive a vehicle "in such unsafe condition as to endanger any person or property." The owner may not knowingly allow it either. An officer may stop the driver and inspect the car on reasonable cause to believe it is unsafe or not equipped as the law requires.
What follows depends on the officer's finding. The officer may require immediate repair or removal from use when the car is unsafe and continued operation would probably present an unduly hazardous operating condition. A lesser equipment defect, where continued operation would not be unduly hazardous, gets a written notice instead. That notice allows 48 hours for the repair, excluding Sunday.
For a Florida driver with a crack in the view area, the simplest course is to replace the glass before an officer sees it. A separate section, Fla. Stat. 316.2952, requires a windshield in a fixed and upright position on every motor vehicle on public roads. That windshield needs safety glazing that meets federal standards, and motorcycles and implements of husbandry are excepted.
| Rule | Arizona | Florida |
|---|---|---|
| Unsafe-condition test | A.R.S. 28-921: no driving a vehicle in an unsafe condition that endangers a person | Fla. Stat. 316.610: no driving a vehicle in such unsafe condition as to endanger any person or property |
| Officer stop, inspection and repair order | None in A.R.S. 28-921 | Stop and inspection on reasonable cause; immediate repair or removal from use if unduly hazardous; a written notice allowing 48 hours, excluding Sunday, if not |
| Safety glass in the windshield | A.R.S. 28-959(D): replacement windshield glass must be safety glass | Fla. Stat. 316.2952: the windshield must carry safety glazing that meets federal standards |
| Crack length named | None | None |
The safety-glass rules cover the new windshield itself. Put them beside the 2025 manual and the order of events after a replacement is clear. Safety glass goes into the opening, and then the front camera is recalibrated.
Camry Cracks That Call for Replacement Now
If the crack touches the shaded area in front of the front camera, or reaches the mirror and ceiling parts, replace the windshield now and plan the recalibration with it. If the crack crosses your view of the road, treat it as a safety question under both states' unsafe-vehicle laws and replace it before more daily driving. If it sits low and clear of both zones, book new glass on a date that suits you, since the windshield still braces the roof and pillars. Glass matching and booking are on our Toyota windshield replacement page.
Camry windshield crack questions
Is repair or replace the right call for a crack in a Camry windshield?
Toyota's 2025 Camry manual line says to replace a damaged or cracked windshield. Chip repair is a separate service some shops offer, and Bang AutoGlass replaces glass only. A crack that sits low and clear of the camera area and your view is the one that can wait for a scheduled appointment, since Arizona and Florida set no crack length.
Does the Toyota camera bulletin apply to a 2019 Camry windshield?
A 2019 Camry falls inside the 2018 to 2020 range that bulletin T-SB-0005-20 lists. The bulletin concerns trouble code C1AAE and camera messages that may trace to a camera heater hood that did not come from Toyota. It is a repair guide, not a recall and not a finding that Camry windshields crack, so it does not tell you whether your crack needs replacing.
What does Florida law call a lesser windshield defect?
Fla. Stat. 316.610 gives wipers as its own example of an equipment defect where continued driving is not unduly hazardous. For those, the officer gives a written notice that allows 48 hours for the repair, excluding Sunday. A crack across the driver's view is more likely to be judged unsafe, which can mean immediate repair or removal from use.
