A fixed Toyota back glass is one pane with nothing to run. A power back window or a separate glass hatch adds controls, lockouts and wiper rules that have to work again once new glass goes in. Those moving features, more than the pane itself, are the factors that change how big the back glass job is. Replacement types for a Toyota rear window come in three forms: glass that stays put, glass that moves at the press of a button, and glass that opens as its own hatch.

Knowing which form you have tells you what to test after the work and what to mention when you book. For the service itself, start at the Toyota rear glass replacement page, and other Toyota glass is listed on the Toyota auto glass page. Three nearby questions have their own posts. The printed heating lines sit under the defogger grid and antenna, window film under tint and decal rules, and water inside a pickup cab under the Tacoma stop lamp leak.

Fixed, Sliding or Power: Replacement Types for a Toyota Rear Window

A fixed back glass is the simplest of the three. It has no button, no track and no lockout. It is usually bonded with a bead of urethane on the body flange, so the job centers on cutting out the old pane and setting the new one in fresh adhesive. Bonded glass then needs that urethane to cure, and the technician tells you when the vehicle is ready to drive.

The black band printed around the edge of most bonded back glass hides that adhesive and shields it from sunlight, so a new pane needs the same band to protect the new bead. We come to you, so the work happens where the vehicle is parked in the Arizona and Florida areas we serve. An adult unlocks it and approves the job, and usually does not need to stay with it until the end.

A sliding back window, manual or power, is a different part from a stationary one, even when the two look alike from the bed. Pickup sliders as a group have their own walkthrough in the post on replacing a truck's sliding rear glass. Back glass on other makes is covered on the general rear glass replacement page.

Toyota's own books show three moving designs among its trucks and SUVs, and each one brings its own checks once the new glass is in. A moving pane also has more parts around it to line up, from the track or frame it travels in to the controls that run it.

Checking a Tundra for the Power Back Window

The 2023 Tundra owner's manual marks its power back window section as fitted only if equipped. That scope matters before you book. One truck of that year can have motorized back glass while another has a fixed pane, and the two are different parts.

The quickest tell is in the cabin. Look for a back window button among the cabin controls, then look at the glass from inside for a frame or track that a section could travel in. If you find the button, the truck takes the power part. If you find neither, it has a fixed pane, and the book's pages on the moving glass do not apply to it. Say which one you found when you book, because the replacement part has to match the truck in front of you.

That section opens with a warning under the heading "Caution while driving." Keep the back window shut. The book gives two reasons: open glass lets personal belongings be thrown out, and it lets exhaust gases enter the vehicle.

Both reasons apply the day the back glass breaks. A pane that has fallen out of its frame, or a motorized back window stuck partway open, leaves the same opening the warning is about. Clear loose items from the back of the cab and the rear seat before you drive anywhere.

After the new glass goes in, the same warning becomes the first test. Run the motorized back window fully open and fully shut from the cabin button, and confirm it meets the top of its opening with no gap. A pane that stops short of the top leaves the opening the book warns about, even when the glass itself is perfect.

A broken back glass also leaves pieces well beyond the opening. Before the job is finished, the technician looks behind the rear seats and around the spots where the seat belts retract, then vacuums the broken glass out of the cab.

The 4Runner's Power Rear Window, 2021 and 2025

The press release on the all-new 2025 4Runner lists a standard power rear window with an available hands-free power liftgate. The moving glass is listed as standard, and the hands-free liftgate is the option. A 2025 with that liftgate and one without it both carry the power rear window, and both need that part when the glass breaks.

The rules for using that glass come from an older book. The 2021 4Runner owner's manual lets smart-key vehicles run the rear glass from outside, but only while the electronic key is within the detection range. A back door that is not fully shut also stops the cabin control from opening the glass.

Both conditions can pass for a fault on a freshly replaced pane. A key left in the house means the outside control does nothing, and a back door that has not latched leaves the cabin control unable to lower the glass. Shut the back door firmly and carry the key before you judge the new glass. If you stepped away during the work, run these checks when you are back with the key, since the outside test needs the key within range.

Those rules belong to the 2021 model. The 2025 4Runner is the all-new model the release introduces, and the release names the standard glass without the rules for using it. If you drive a 2025, check the key, back door and wiper behavior in that year's owner's manual before you treat anything here as a fault. When you book, give the model year first, because the year is part of what identifies the back glass the SUV takes.

Rear Wiper and Washer Lockouts on the 4Runner

On the 2021 4Runner, the back glass can be lowered while the rear wiper is working, but the wiper then stops until the glass is all the way up again. Leave the glass short of the top, and the rear wiper, washer and defogger will not work. The manual's separate procedure for a window protection function that acts abnormally has the owner keep the switch held in the one-touch closing position for a further 6 seconds after the window has closed.

Those two rules turn the wiper into a check on where the glass sits. A wiper that will not start can mean a pane sitting a little short of the top, and the rear washer goes quiet with it. Before anyone looks at the wiper motor or the washer line, close the glass fully and try again.

After new glass goes in, test in this order:

  1. Close the back door firmly, then close the glass fully from the cabin.
  2. Run the rear washer and let it wet the glass.
  3. Run the rear wiper across the wet glass and watch a full pass.
  4. With the wiper running, open the glass a little. The wiper should stop.
  5. Close the glass fully. The wiper should start again with the glass shut.

A pass on all five steps shows the new pane goes all the way up and the lockout releases when it does. If the wiper stays dead with the glass fully up and the back door shut, the height of the glass is no longer the cause. The wiring or the wiper itself is the next place to look. The same goes when the glass is shut and only one of the wiper and washer fails, because the lockout ties both to the glass being all the way up.

A Hatch Glass That Opens on Its Own

The 2017 Highlander adds a third design on vehicles fitted with one: a glass hatch in the back door. The 2017 Highlander owner's manual says the hatch can be opened when the back door is shut, so the glass lifts by itself while the door stays shut. A hatch pane is its own part, and the rules for opening it and shutting it all come back to the rear wiper.

Opening comes with three rules. Open the glass hatch slowly and carefully. Make sure the rear window wiper is turned off. Do not rotate the rear wiper arm while the hatch is open.

That last rule shapes how you clean a new hatch pane. Wipe the glass with the hatch shut, or leave the wiper arm where it rests while the glass is up.

Shutting it has two checks. Make sure the back door is shut before you lower the glass hatch. Afterward, check that the hatch is firmly shut, because if it is not, the rear window wiper and washer will not work correctly.

On a new hatch pane, run the checks in the order the rules fall:

  1. With the back door shut and the rear wiper turned off, open the hatch slowly.
  2. Confirm the hatch opens while the back door stays shut.
  3. Leave the wiper arm alone while the glass is up.
  4. Close the hatch with a firm push, then check that it is firmly shut.
  5. Run the rear washer, then watch the wiper make a full pass on the wet glass.

A hatch that looks shut but did not close firmly shows up at the last step as a wiper or washer that misbehaves. Push it shut again before you suspect the new glass.

The hatch is also the easiest feature to confirm before you book. With the back door shut, try opening the glass alone. If it opens, the replacement has to be a hatch pane. If nothing opens, that Highlander's back door carries a fixed pane.

Dry Glass and the Rear Wiper on a 2025 Highlander

The 2025 Highlander owner's manual carries a short notice for the rear wiper: when the rear window is dry, do not use the wiper, as it may damage the rear window. On that model, wet glass comes first every time the wiper runs.

That notice matters most in the first days with new glass. Dust or fingerprints on a fresh pane tempt a quick dry sweep to clear them. Clean the glass by hand instead, or run the washer and let the fluid reach the glass before the blade moves.

For the first test on a 2025 Highlander, use this order:

  1. Look at the glass. If it is dry, do not start with the wiper.
  2. Check that the washer reservoir has fluid, since an empty one leaves the blade sweeping dry glass.
  3. Run the rear washer until fluid covers the area the blade sweeps.
  4. Run the wiper over the wet glass and watch a full pass.
  5. Stop the wiper before the glass dries out again.

Rain does the same job as the washer. A pane that is already wet from rain or a hose can take the wiper test straight away, because the notice is about a dry rear window. On a dry, dusty day, the washer step comes first every time.

A Roof Fin Antenna Versus an Antenna in the Glass

Where the antenna lives is one more thing that changes what rides with the back glass. The 2021 RAV4 e-brochure lists a color-keyed roof-mounted shark-fin antenna among the exterior features. On that model, the antenna sits on the roof as its own part, apart from the back glass.

Back glass that carries an antenna adds one more connection to restore when the old pane comes out, and reception is the check that it worked. With the fin on the roof, that step drops out of the back glass job for the 2021 RAV4. Look at your roof for a body-colored fin before you book, and mention it if you see one.

That fin is listed for the 2021 RAV4, so a different year or a different Toyota SUV may place its antenna elsewhere. Check the roof of your own vehicle before you assume the same layout. A vehicle with no roof fin may still have an antenna in the glass, and that pane has one more connection for the technician to restore and test.

The Back Glass Details to Have Ready When You Book

Does the back glass move?Is there a separate glass hatch? Is there a rear wiper?Where is the antenna?
Fixed, sliding, or power with a cabin buttonYes if the glass opens with the back door shutYes or no; test it on wet glassOn the roof, or in the glass

Those four answers, with the year, model and body style, are what we use to identify the exact back glass your Toyota takes. Mention a motorized back window or a glass hatch when you book, since each brings its own checks once the glass is in. Start from the Toyota rear glass replacement service, or go straight to booking a rear glass appointment.

Toyota back glass questions

What is the back window on a Toyota called?

Toyota's wording changes with the model and year. The 2025 4Runner press release says "power rear window", the 2021 4Runner and 2023 Tundra manuals say "power back window", and the 2017 Highlander manual calls the piece that lifts open a "glass hatch". Shops say back glass or rear glass for all of them, so use the term your own manual prints when you book.

Which Toyota models have a back window that rolls down?

The 2021 4Runner manual describes a power back window, and Toyota's release for the 2025 4Runner lists a standard power rear window. The 2023 Tundra manual describes one only where equipped, so some Tundras carry a fixed pane instead. The 2017 Highlander manual describes a glass hatch that lifts open, on vehicles fitted with one.

When can the Toyota Highlander glass hatch be opened?

The 2017 Highlander manual says the glass hatch can be opened when the back door is closed, and it asks owners to make sure the back door is closed before the hatch is lowered again. Open it slowly and carefully, and do not rotate the rear wiper arm while the hatch is up.
