Why Polk County roads are so hard on windshields

Both are long-running reconstruction corridors, and a construction corridor stays a gravel corridor for years after the cones come down.

Then Central Florida weather finishes what the trucks started. Mulberry is inland — something like forty miles from either coast — so the salt corrosion that eats at pinch welds in the beach towns is not the story here. Heat is. A vehicle parked in an open lot on a July afternoon carries glass surface temperatures well above the air temperature, and then a Polk County thunderstorm arrives around four o'clock and dumps cold rain across it. That swing is what turns a quiet chip into a crack running the full width of the glass, usually while the car is parked and nobody is watching. Add haul-road and agricultural dust settling on the glass, then wipers dragging it back and forth, and you get fine scratching in the wiper sweep that scatters oncoming headlights at night.

That is why recalibration is not optional. A camera that believes the lane line sits a few inches off where it really is will nudge the steering or brake at the wrong moment. What Florida law actually covers

Under Fla. Stat. 627.7288, an insurer must waive the comprehensive deductible on a windshield replacement where the policy carries comprehensive coverage. Two limits on that, stated plainly because they are the two that catch people out:

• The policy has to include comprehensive coverage. A liability-only policy is not reached by the statute at all.
• It is windshield only. It does not extend to back glass, door glass, quarter glass or sunroof glass. Those follow your policy's ordinary comprehensive terms and your normal deductible.

Florida SB 1002, in effect since 2023, ended assignment of benefits for auto glass claims and bars glass shops from offering inducements to win the work. In practice that is better for you than it sounds: the claim stays yours, the choice of shop stays yours, and no shop in Florida may lawfully offer you anything on the side to steer that choice.
