Toyota laminated side windows appear in the maker's own documents grade by grade, and almost always on the front doors only. The table below gives each year and grade those documents name, from a 2017 Prius to a 2025 Sequoia, with the document behind each row.
The glass is a grade feature. Two cars of the same model and year can leave the factory with different front door glass, so the grade on your paperwork is the thing to look up first. Our Toyota glass replacement page covers the wider range of glass work on these models.
Toyota Laminated Side Windows, Model by Model
Each row comes from a Toyota press release, brochure or owner's manual. Find your model year, then your grade, then read the glass column.
| Model and year | Grades named | Side glass named | Document |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 Highlander | Limited, Platinum | Laminated front side window glass | 2020 Highlander launch release |
| 2025 Camry (hybrid) | XLE, XSE | Standard front-side acoustic laminated glass | Next-generation Camry release |
| 2017 Prius liftback | Higher grades | Sound-insulating laminated front door glass | 2017 Prius liftback release |
| 2021 Prius Prime | No grade named | Sound-insulating laminated front door glass | 2021 Prius Prime release |
| 2021 RAV4 Prime | Prime SE, Prime XSE (standard mark) | Acoustic noise-reducing front side windows | 2021 RAV4 brochure feature table |
| 2025 Sequoia | Capstone only | Acoustic glass in the front doors | 2025 Sequoia release |
| 2017 Avalon | No grade named | Acoustic-type glass for the windshield and side glass | 2017 Avalon release |
| 2024 Tacoma | If equipped | Laminated glass in the windshield and the windows | 2024 Tacoma owner's manual |
| 2022 Venza | No grade named | Windshield only: acoustic glass windshield | 2022 Venza release |
| 2025 4Runner | Not named in the release | Not named in the release; check the owner's manual and the door edge | 2025 4Runner release |
Look for the year and grade on the purchase papers or the original window sticker before you read a row. If you are checking the glass on a used Toyota, start from the grade on the listing, then confirm it at the door itself.
A row with a named grade covers that grade only. A 2020 Highlander in any other grade sits outside that release's sentence. The Sequoia row goes further: the Capstone grade is the only one that year with acoustic glass in the front doors.
Years work the same way. Every row is one model year's document. A 2019 or 2023 example of the same nameplate needs its own manual or brochure checked before you assume anything about the doors.
Position matters too. Six of the eight side-glass rows name only the front doors or front side windows. Most rear door, quarter and back glass is tempered, the kind that breaks into small cubes, and those six rows never reach past the front doors. The Avalon row says side glass with no position given, and the Tacoma row says the windows, if equipped. On those two, check the owner's manual for your exact year before you decide what the rear doors carry.
Acoustic, Laminated or Windshield-Only: Reading Toyota's Wording
Three kinds of word turn up in these documents, and they answer different questions. Laminated describes how the glass is built: two sheets of glass with a clear plastic layer pasted between them. Acoustic, sound-insulating and noise-reducing describe what the glass does to sound. A sentence can name one without the other.
Three rows use both kinds of word together. The 2025 Camry grades get acoustic laminated glass on the front sides. The higher grades of the 2017 Prius get sound-insulating laminated front door glass. The 2021 Prius Prime gets the same pairing of words for its front doors. Those rows tell you the build and the purpose at once.
The Avalon, Sequoia and RAV4 rows use the sound words alone. On the 2017 Avalon, acoustic-type glass in the windshield and side glass is one item in a list of sound-absorbing and sound-insulating materials. Foam injected into the A-, B- and C-pillars and the rocker panels sits in the same list. Read that row as a noise feature with the build left open, and confirm the build at the door edge.
The Sequoia's Capstone grade gets acoustic glass in the front doors for more exterior sound deadening. The 2021 RAV4 brochure handles the feature as a line in its grade table. The line reads Acoustic noise-reducing front side windows, and the standard mark sits under just the two Prime grade columns, SE and XSE. That makes it a plug-in hybrid row, limited to those two grades in that year's brochure.
The 2022 Venza release mentions an acoustic glass windshield that helps minimize wind noise. That line concerns the windshield alone. It tells you nothing about that SUV's doors either way, which is why its row lists no side glass.
Two releases use neither word. The "Five Things to Know" release on the 2025 4Runner contains neither laminated nor acoustic. The May 2023 release that introduced the 2024 Tacoma contains neither word either. A silent press release is no proof that a model lacks the glass, and the Tacoma shows why. Its launch release is silent, yet the owner's manual for the same truck has laminated glass in the windshield and the windows, if equipped. For the 4Runner, the owner's manual for your year and the edge of the door glass are the places to check.
Toyota's Stated Reason for Laminated Front Door Glass
Each reason given in these documents comes back to noise. The 2020 Highlander release says it most directly. Its Limited and Platinum grades adopted laminated front side window glass to further isolate the driver from outside noise.
That line sits in a section about a quieter cabin. Sound-damping and soundproofing materials were tuned throughout the vehicle. The stated focus was cutting noise in the frequencies that interfere with conversation. The laminated front glass is offered there as one example of that work, placed on those two grades.
The 2025 Camry case is close to it. Its higher-end grades get a quieter cabin thanks to standard front-side acoustic laminated glass. The stated aim is less wind noise and harshness. Those grades also get available heated and ventilated front seats, so the glass belongs to a comfort package for the upper trims.
The hybrids explain the reason from the other side. The 2017 Prius powertrain runs quietly, and its shape blunts wind noise. A sound-insulating laminated windshield and sound absorbers in the dash structure cut noise further. The higher grades add laminated front door glass on top of that, to keep outside noise from reaching the cabin.
The 2021 plug-in model, the Prius Prime, makes a similar pairing. It stays a quiet cruiser in all drive modes, credited to a sound-insulating laminated windshield and front door glass, other sound measures and aero shaping. In EV mode on the highway, the car cruises in silence by the release's account. That claim covers the 2021 car; the 2017 liftback release is a separate document with its own grade limit.
Two things follow for an owner. The glass is a comfort feature tied to grade, which is why a base car and a top grade of the same year can carry different front door glass. And because Toyota fitted it for noise, a replacement order for one of these doors should name the grade, so the parts match what the door was built with.
How to Tell Laminated from Tempered on Your Own Door
The 2024 Tacoma owner's manual gives the tell in one line: viewed in cross-section, laminated glass is two sheets of glass pasted together. The Tacoma manual's laminated glass page pictures a laminated edge next to a tempered one. You can check the same thing on any door with the window partly down.
- Lower the front window two or three inches so the top edge clears the weatherstrip.
- Look at that edge from above in good light. A laminated pane shows two glass layers with a thin line between them.
- Do the same on a rear door. A tempered pane shows one solid thickness, and the rear door gives you a quick comparison.
- Check the year and grade against the table, so the edge and the paperwork agree.
A broken pane gives the answer after the fact. Tempered glass breaks into small, blunt cubes that fall into the door and onto the seat. Laminated glass cracks, and the plastic layer keeps the pieces attached to each other.
For the general side of this question, our post on how tempered and laminated door glass differ covers both types on any car. The detail that changes on these models is the grade. Two cars of one year can show different edges on the front doors.
If a trim strip hides the edge, or the window will not lower, the year and grade are your next check. Glass for one model can change from year to year and grade to grade, so we match the replacement pane to your VIN.
Tacoma owners have one more line to read. The manual's laminated glass sentence carries a footnote that marks it "if equipped." On that truck, check each window's edge before you count on either type.
What a Window Hammer Will and Will Not Do
An emergency hammer will not open laminated glass. The Tacoma manual is direct on this: laminated glass cannot be shattered with an emergency hammer. For details on choosing a hammer, it refers owners to a Toyota dealer or an accessory maker.
That warning sits in the 2024 Tacoma book, where laminated glass is used in the windshield and the windows, if equipped. On a truck that has it, a hammer kept in the console will not clear the door glass. If your row in the table names laminated front door glass, read the emergency section of your own year's manual before you count on a hammer for those doors.
The same Tacoma page sets the hammer note inside its flood guidance. Its first instruction is to avoid the water: do not drive on roads that may be submerged or where the water may be rising. The truck is not built to drive through deep flooding.
Federal guidance gives the same order of steps for any driver. FEMA's flood safety tips say that if you come to a flooded roadway, or the road ahead is barricaded, do not drive or walk through it. As little as six inches of flooding can make you lose control of the vehicle.
If the car is already trapped in rapidly moving water, FEMA's advice is to stay inside the vehicle. If water is rising inside the car, get on the roof. Neither step depends on a hammer or on the type of glass in the doors.
Turning around before the water is the step that matters most on any of these models. Know which of your windows are laminated, keep the manual's emergency page in mind, and treat a flooded road as closed.
Cracked Laminated Door Glass: What Changes
A cracked laminated door glass behaves like a cracked windshield. The plastic layer holds the broken glass together, so the pane keeps its shape in the frame. You will not find a pile of cubes on the seat or in the door.
That is a direct result of the build the Tacoma manual pictures: two sheets pasted together. On a truck with laminated windows, if equipped, the windshield and the side windows share that build, and a crack in either one spreads as lines.
The bigger change is the order. On the grades in the table, the front doors carry laminated or acoustic glass that other grades of the same year do not get in their documents. A replacement order has to carry the model year, the grade and the exact door, front or rear, driver or passenger. Without the grade, an order for a front door can match the wrong pane for that car.
Write those details down before you book. Note which door is cracked, the grade from your paperwork, and whether the broken pane held together or fell into cubes. That last detail tells you the glass type even if the paperwork is missing.
We identify the exact moving pane from the year, make, model and door position, and we replace damaged glass; cracks are not something we repair. Our Toyota door glass replacement page covers these models, and the door glass replacement page covers the service on every make.
One car can carry both types. On the grades in the table, the front doors are laminated or acoustic while the rear doors are usually tempered. A rear window broken in a break-in falls into cubes, while the front glass on the same car would crack and hold. Give the grade and the door when you ask for the pane, so the order matches the door that broke.
Your Toyota's Side Glass at a Glance
| Where the documents name it | Why it is fitted | How to check your door | If it breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front door glass on named grades of six models; all windows on a 2024 Tacoma, if equipped | Less outside and wind noise in the cabin | Two sheets pasted together at the top edge of the glass | Laminated cracks and holds together; tempered breaks into small cubes |
Match your year and grade to the first table, then confirm the build at the top edge of the front door glass. When a pane breaks, give the grade and the door position with the booking. The Toyota glass replacement page lists the work on these models, and the door glass booking page starts a replacement. We come to you in Arizona's Phoenix area (about 50 miles around Phoenix) and Tucson area (about 30 miles around central Tucson), and in Florida's Tampa Bay, Orlando, Miami and Jacksonville metros.
Toyota laminated side window questions
Are the front side windows laminated glass on a Toyota Highlander?
Toyota's launch release for the 2020 Highlander names the Limited and Platinum grades as having adopted laminated front side window glass, with the stated aim of isolating the driver from outside noise. The sentence covers those two grades in that model year. For any other grade or year, read the matching Toyota document and then look at the top edge of the lowered door glass.
Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime grades have acoustic noise-reducing front side windows?
Toyota's 2021 RAV4 brochure feature table has a line item reading Acoustic noise-reducing front side windows, and the standard mark sits under only two grade columns, RAV4 Prime SE and RAV4 Prime XSE. The line is a feature entry for that model year, so a different year needs its own brochure checked.
Which 2025 Toyota Camry grades have acoustic laminated front side glass?
Toyota's release on the next-generation Camry says the XLE and XSE grades come with standard front-side acoustic laminated glass to help reduce wind noise and harshness. The same release adds available heated and ventilated front seats on those grades, so the glass sits in an upper-trim comfort package.
Can a window hammer break laminated Toyota door glass?
The 2024 Tacoma owner's manual says laminated glass cannot be shattered with an emergency hammer and sends owners to a Toyota dealer or an accessory maker for hammer details. On that truck the laminated statement is marked if equipped. FEMA's advice for a car trapped in rapidly moving water is to stay inside the vehicle.
