A Toyota pre-collision system malfunction after windshield work usually arrives as one specific message, and each message points at a different part of the vehicle. Some point at the glass in front of the camera. Others point at the radar sensor up front, a setting that was switched off, or the battery. The exact words on the multi-information display tell you which check comes first.

Two Toyota books print these messages with their fixes: the 2024 Tacoma owner's manual and the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid driving support excerpt. Each one applies to its own model and year. Your vehicle has its own manual, and its wording can differ, so match the words on your screen to your own book. When the message turns out to be about camera aim, that work is on the Toyota ADAS calibration page.

Toyota Pre-Collision System Malfunction After Windshield Work Comes in Several Forms

The warning lamp and the display text work as a pair. In the Tacoma manual's warning-light table, a PCS warning light that flashes or stays lit "Indicates a malfunction in the PCS (Pre-Collision System)" and sends the driver to the display. The action printed beside it is to follow the instructions on the multi-information display. The lamp starts the search, and the text narrows it.

The warning-light table gives the lamp a second meaning. If the PCS or the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system is disabled, the PCS warning light will illuminate. A lit lamp can therefore mean a system is switched off with no broken part anywhere. The lamp by itself proves nothing about the camera, and nothing about the glass job.

One message stands apart. "System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" means one of a listed group of systems is disabled. The truck's list includes PCS, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beam and dynamic radar cruise control, some of them only if equipped. Its instruction is a dealer inspection right away, covered further down.

Driving with a message on the screen means driving without the aid it names. The truck still steers and brakes under your control. The automatic warning or braking that the message names may not step in while it shows. Leave extra room ahead until the PCS message clears or the cause is found.

Each message below has its own first fix in the manual that prints it.

Camera Messages: Dirt, Stickers and a Hood Left Open

Of the front camera warnings a driver may see after a new windshield, "System Stopped Front Camera Low Visibility See Owner's Manual" is the one whose fixes involve the glass. The front camera looks out through the glass, and anything that dims its patch of glass can stop it. The Tacoma manual lists a short set of correction methods for this message:

  • Run the windshield wipers to remove dirt or foreign matter from the glass.
  • Defog the windshield with the air conditioning system.
  • Close the hood, and remove any stickers or other items blocking the view in front of the front camera.

Try each step before anyone suspects the front camera. All three deal with what sits between the lens and the road.

Stickers deserve a second look after a replacement. Parking permits and toll tags can go back onto new glass, and a tag placed near the camera can block part of its view. Move any tag well clear of the front camera. The Toyota windshield replacement page covers the glass side of the job.

The hood item is easy to miss. A raised hood stands up in front of the windshield and sits in the camera's line of sight. The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid excerpt carries the same hood-and-sticker fix in its own words, so two different models treat it as a first check.

A water-repellent treatment does not retire the wipers. With a glass coating agent applied, the 2025 hybrid still needs its wipers to clear water droplets from the area in front of the front camera. An oily film, water droplets or dirt on the glass call for cleaning in that excerpt too.

Some camera messages concern the back of the vehicle. One Tacoma message lists Rear Camera Detection and Parking Support Brake, where equipped, and asks the driver to remove dirt or foreign matter from the rear camera. Those rear camera messages have nothing to do with the windshield.

Camera aim is a separate question from a dirty view. Aim is set by a procedure, and the post on how Toyota's bulletin sets up the camera target walks through what that involves on one model.

Radar Messages Do Not Point at the Windshield

A second sensor shares the work with the camera. The front radar sensor sits up front with the grille and bumper, and its messages name the radar in the text. The fixes for those messages sit at the sensor, at its cover, or in the drive itself.

Front Radar Sensor Blocked

For "System Stopped Front Radar Sensor Blocked," the 2024 Tacoma manual first asks for a look at the radar sensor and its cover. If anything is stuck to them, clean it off. Anything on that cover sits directly in the radar's path.

The same message may appear on an open road with few nearby vehicles or structures, such as a desert, grasslands or suburbs. Driving where structures and other vehicles are close may clear it. A message that shows on an empty highway and goes away back in town fits that description, and no step for it involves the glass.

Front Radar in Self Calibration

"System Stopped Front Radar In Self Calibration" means the radar sensor may be misaligned and will be adjusted automatically while driving. The instruction is to continue driving for a while. The sensor finds its aim on the move, so waiting at the curb will not finish the job.

The 2025 hybrid book has its own version, "Pre-Collision System Radar In Self Calibration Unavailable See Owner's Manual" on the display. Its fix is to check whether anything is attached to the radar sensor or its cover and remove it. Again, the windshield is not part of that step.

Grille and Bumper Work

Front-end body work is where the radar needs more than a clean cover. That hybrid excerpt says the radar sensor must be recalibrated when the radar sensor or front grille is removed and installed, or replaced. A replaced front bumper also calls for it. For details, that book sends owners to a Toyota dealer.

That rule is written for the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid, and your model's manual holds its own version. If the windshield went in during the same repair as front-end work, a radar message may belong to the bumper or grille side of the job.

Glass Cleaner, Camera Lens and Mounting After a Replacement

The first interior cleaning of new glass is where a good habit can create a problem. The hybrid's excerpt asks owners not to let glass cleaner contact the front camera lens when cleaning the inside of the windshield. It also asks them not to touch the lens, not to let liquids reach the camera, and not to let bright lights shine into it. Spray the cleaner onto a cloth, keep the cloth away from the lens, and wipe the glass around the camera area by hand.

If the lens itself is dirty or damaged, that excerpt sends the owner to a Toyota dealer. A smudge on the glass is a wiper or cloth job. A smudge on the lens is a dealer item in that book.

The camera's position is fixed by the vehicle. The same excerpt says not to change the installation position or direction of the front camera, and not to remove it. It warns against a strong impact to the camera, and against modifying parts of the vehicle around it.

Aim can be off with no light on the dash. A clean, quiet display does not prove the camera points where the vehicle expects. The ADAS calibration overview covers calibration in general.

Settings and Battery Voltage That Mimic a Camera Fault

One button can light the PCS lamp with no fault anywhere. In the 2024 Tacoma, holding the traction control off button for more than three seconds while the truck is stopped turns that system off. It also disables PCS, leaving only the pre-collision warning available. Automatic braking from that system is off until the setting comes back. The PCS warning light then comes on, and a message appears on the multi-information display.

Two other signs come with it. The display shows "Traction Control Turned OFF," and the VSC OFF indicator lights. Pressing the button again turns the system back on. This matches the warning-light table from earlier: the PCS lamp lights whenever PCS or VSC is disabled.

If the PCS lamp came on together with the VSC OFF indicator, check that button before booking anything. A long press while parked is all it takes, and the lamp looks the same as a fault from the driver's seat.

Battery voltage is the other quiet cause. For "System Stopped See Owner's Manual," the truck's correction methods start with checking the voltage of the battery. Low voltage is the first thing that manual asks you to rule out for that message. Have the 12-volt battery tested before anyone looks at the camera or the glass.

Sun and Wet Glass Change the First Check

Heat and rain each change which check comes first. In a 2018 study, Arizona State University researchers parked six cars through three summer days in the 100s. After one hour, dashboards in sun-parked cars averaged 157 degrees F, against 118 degrees F in cars parked in shade. The Tacoma manual also carries a front camera message for temperature out of range, and it asks the driver to wait until the temperature is normal.

In Arizona, where those sun-parked dashboards averaged 157 degrees F against 118 in shade, recheck any message seen after a hot parking-lot stop once the cabin cools. Run the air conditioning, drive for a few minutes, and read the display again before calling it a fault. Park in shade when you can, and give the front camera time to come back into its range.

In Florida, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) tells drivers in low visibility to use wipers and defrosters. Its reason is that clean, clear glass on the windshield, windows and mirrors is critical for maximum visibility. When the camera's low-visibility message appears in rain or fog, run the wipers and the defroster first, then re-check before treating the camera as faulty.

The same FLHSMV page advises replacing wiper blades at least once a year. Worn blades leave streaks across the glass, and the camera looks through the same streaks you do. A fresh pair is a simple fix to try when the low-visibility message keeps returning on wet days.

What Stays With a Toyota Dealer When a Message Will Not Clear

Some messages are not meant to be cleared at home. For "System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer," the 2024 Tacoma manual says to have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately. When that message stays after the glass is clean, the cabin is cool and the battery checks out, the instruction holds: a dealer inspection, right away.

The 2025 hybrid book adds two dealer items. A front camera lens that is dirty or damaged goes to the dealer. Radar recalibration after grille or bumper work goes there for details as well. If front-end body work happened alongside the glass job, ask about radar recalibration as part of that repair.

Before that visit, write down the exact wording on the display, the day it first appeared, and what came just before it. A car wash, a hot parking lot, a rain drive, front-end work and the glass job each point toward a different line of the manual's list. That short record saves the person inspecting the vehicle from guessing which message you saw.

A message that keeps coming back may also fall under a recall or a special service campaign for your model. Those are looked up separately from the warning itself, and a match can change who handles the repair.

Camera calibration after new glass follows the vehicle's own procedure. When we calibrate, that procedure sets the method: static targets, a road drive, both, or an initialization. The Toyota service hub links the make's other glass services.

When a Safety Sense Message Calls for a Camera Check and When It Does Not

If the message names the radar, the battery or a switched-off setting, fix that cause first, because no step for those messages touches the windshield. If a front camera low-visibility message clears after wiping, defogging, cooling and moving stickers, the camera only needed a clear view. If the dealer message appears, or stays after cleaning, cooling and a battery test, book the immediate inspection the manual asks for. If the glass was replaced and nobody has confirmed whether your model's procedure calls for calibration, book a camera check through the Toyota camera calibration service, even with a dark dashboard.

Toyota pre-collision warning questions

Can I keep driving a Toyota with a pre-collision system malfunction warning?

The lamp sends a Tacoma driver to the display, and the display text sets the urgency. "System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" is the message where the 2024 Tacoma manual asks for a Toyota dealer inspection immediately, because one of its listed systems is disabled. For "Radar In Self Calibration," the same manual says the sensor adjusts while driving and to continue driving for a while.

Can a weak battery cause a Toyota pre-collision system malfunction message?

For the "System Stopped See Owner's Manual" message, the 2024 Tacoma manual lists checking the battery voltage as the first of its correction methods, ahead of anything about the camera. A 12-volt battery test is a quick way to rule that cause out before anyone suspects the windshield or the front camera.

Does a Toyota need radar recalibration after a windshield replacement?

The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid excerpt ties radar recalibration to three events: the radar sensor or front grille being removed and installed or replaced, and the front bumper being replaced. A windshield is not on that list. Front-end body work done alongside a glass job is the case to raise with a Toyota dealer, since the book sends owners there for details.

Why is the Toyota PCS warning light on when the VSC OFF indicator is lit?

In the 2024 Tacoma, the PCS lamp can come on with the VSC OFF indicator after a long press of the traction control off button while the truck is stopped, since PCS is also disabled then and only the pre-collision warning remains. The lamp lights whenever PCS or VSC is off, so a setting is the first thing to rule out before assuming a camera fault.
