Acura Rear Glass Replacement

The sedans carry a fixed, adhesive-bonded backlight raked over a rear parcel shelf. Nothing on the pane moves, no wiper is drilled through it, and the high-mount stop lamp usually sits inside the cabin rather than on the glass. What these cars do have is a defroster grid printed on the inner surface and often antenna elements in the same pane.

The real complication is what sits directly beneath. The rear deck on a TLX, TL, RL, RLX, TSX or ILX is perforated with speaker grilles — on well-optioned cars, ELS Studio rear-deck speakers. When the backlight releases, granules pour through those openings into the trunk and onto speaker cones, plus the seat-belt slots and folding pass-through. Vacuuming the visible shelf takes two minutes. Getting glass out of everything beneath it is the actual job.

Here the glass is bonded into a hinged panel that swings, latches and slams. The 2023-and-newer Integra is a five-door liftback, the RSX was a three-door liftback through 2006, and the TSX was offered as a Sport Wagon from 2011 to 2014. Where your car carries a rear wiper, the motor mounts behind the pane and the spindle passes through a bore in the glass, so the replacement must be the correct drilled variant and the wiper re-timed to its park position rather than bolted back on.

Hatch glass also fails messily in a particular way. Because the pane is bonded to a metal hatch frame, granules work down inside the tailgate skin through the drain slots and rattle there for months if nobody opens it up. Add the cargo area and spare-tyre well, and a liftback scatters glass through more cavities than any sedan.

The MDX is Acura's three-row SUV and the RDX its two-row, and both put a large tempered pane in a heavy liftgate. Where equipped, that liftgate is power-operated with hands-free access — the panel you are working on can actuate itself, so it gets isolated before the pane comes out and cycled deliberately afterward. Rear wipers are common on both, mounted high and partly shrouded by the roof spoiler on some generations, and the high-mount stop lamp typically rides in that spoiler rather than on the glass. Privacy tint across the rear half is an Acura convention from mid-trim upward, so the replacement must match shade as well as size.

Cleanup on an MDX is the longest of any Acura. Granules land in the third-row seat rails, the underfloor cargo wells and along the tailgate trim, and with the third row folded, the well it drops into becomes a collection tray for broken glass. We pull trim and lift floor panels rather than running a shop vacuum over the top and calling it done.

Say ZDX and you could mean either of two vehicles that share almost nothing. The original, built from 2010 to 2013, was a fastback crossover with hidden rear door handles and a dramatically raked hatch: a large, heavily curved pane on a short-run car. That matters for sourcing, and we are straight about lead time rather than promising a part we have not confirmed.

The ZDX that returned for 2024 is something else entirely: Acura's first fully electric SUV, built on GM's Ultium architecture with the battery pack under the cargo floor. The pane is conventional tempered glass in a liftgate, but the environment around it is not. Our technicians clear the cargo area and load floor carefully and do not improvise around high-voltage hardware.

The NSX is the outlier. Both generations are mid-engine, so the glass behind your head looks into machinery rather than at the road. The first-generation car was built around an all-aluminium monocoque and was also sold as the NSX-T with a removable targa roof panel, which changes what surrounds the rear glazing. The second-generation NSX is a twin-turbocharged hybrid with high-voltage components at the rear, and some arrangements add a glazed engine cover alongside the backlight, so we establish which pane is broken before ordering.

When an NSX rear pane releases, granules fall onto engine covers and into intake and cooling ducts, where no household vacuum reaches. This is the Acura where extraction, not installation, is the demanding half.

A large share of the Acura fleet on Arizona and Florida roads is out of production: the RSX ended in 2006, the TL and TSX in 2014, the RL in 2012, the first ZDX in 2013, the RLX in 2020 and the ILX in 2022. That is not cause for pessimism. Acura shares much of its engineering with Honda, sedan volumes were healthy, and rear glass for a TL, TSX or ILX is generally straightforward to source.

The honest exceptions are the low-volume cars. The 2010-2013 ZDX and both NSX generations use glazing never made in quantity, so availability drives the timeline, not our schedule. If you own one, call us and we will tell you what we can source and how long it takes.
